What we're about

This is a group for people who love to hear live music - americana, country, folk, blues, bluegrass - but don't necessarily want to hear it on their own. If you love live music and great people, join us!

We go to a variety of gigs and sessions around London. Sometimes it's a set of new local bands we don't know about. Sometimes they're great, sometimes not - that's part of the joy of discovering new music! Sometimes we organise trips to big concerts by touring international artists too, or go to festivals. We even did a trip to Nashville!

If we're going to listen to someone you like or if you want to take a chance and maybe discover some great new music, come along - we’d love to see you!

What sort of music?

We've been to see: folk, americana, blues, bluegrass, blues-rock, alternative-indie, indie-rock, honky-tonk, Cajun, world, roots, nu-folk, folk-rock, folk-pop, folk punk … just to name a few. Some of the artists, big and small, include: Sarah Vista, The East Lonesome Drifters, The Afrocelt Sound System, The Handsome Family, Yola, Neko Case, Roseanne Cash, Rising Appalachia, Danni Nichols, The Rails, Calexico, Tift Merritt, The Secret Sisters, Basia Bulat, The Lake Poets ... and a Johnny Cash impersonator. (He was awesome.)

How events work

Some events are cheap or even free. Others are pricier, big venue gigs. Tickets aren't provided by the group - everyone buys their own - but ticket links will be provided. Some of the gigs sell out fairly quickly so please try and buy in advance so that you definitely get to come!

Every event will have a host. They'll give instructions on how to find them and the rest of event attendees. In return, look for them and make yourself easy to find.

Can't make a gig? Cancel your RSVP and/or let us know.

Suggestions?

We're a member-run group. If you've got a suggestion for a gig, contact an organiser. Note, it has to be a gig you'd attend anyway. Don't use this as PR for your events, your husband's band, your friends' act, etc. We don't do open mic nights either. The more lead-time before the gig, the better. Your organisers don't have the time (or inclination) to go to everything, so if you're willing to act as host for other members, great! Don't be upset if no one seems interested. People are busy and maybe the gig is just not at the right place or time.

Hope to see you soon!

Suggested donation £10, but any donation will be much appreciated. STEVE TILSTON marks his semicentennial as a professional musician and is on top form with no signs of him slowing down just yet… Steve is one of our most celebrated songsmiths, widely recognised within the world of folk and contemporary music; the words, arrangements and subtle, quite superb guitar playing could be no one else. His most recent release Distant Days is a retrospective of an ongoing five-decade career. A new studio album coming soon. He’s the writer of the classic The Slipjigs and Reels, The Naked Highwayman and Here’s to Tom Paine and his songs have been covered by a who’s who of the folk scene. As well as a hugely successful solo career, he’s toured with John Renbourn’s Ship of Fools, traditional singer Maggie Boyle, in WAZ!, with Maartin Allcock and Pete Zorn, the Ballet Rambert, with daughter Martha and most recently as Tilston & Lowe with Jez Lowe. And has produced an enviable catalogue of eclectic work. Accolades include, BBC Radio 2 Folk Award Best Original Song for The Reckoning; the subject of which is still sadly relevant today. Fatea Male Singer of the Year 2015. Numerous radio and TV appearances, notably Later with Jools Holland, BBC Four’s Songwriters’ Circle. He also gained further notoriety when the story of a long-lost letter from John Lennon hit the headlines internationally; inspiring the Hollywood movie Danny Collins starring Al Pacino. Edinburgh born BLUE ROSE CODE spent his creative formative years in East London, but it is in his moving to Liverpool “to be by the sea’s energy” that he has found where his heart is. His album ‘The Water of Leith’ won the Skinny’s album of the year in 2018 and his follow up ‘With Healing Of The Deepest Kind’ was released during lockdown to rave reviews; “Healings is ravishingly beautiful, a burnished blaze of Caledonian Soul, muted jazz and poetic recitation. A bruised peach of a record” 8/10 in Uncut Magazine Karrie O’Sullivan Holmes is a singer/songwriter from Killarney, Co. Kerry. Jimmy Smyth is a Grammy Nominated Guitarist/Producer/Composer originally from Navan, Co. Meath Karrie released her debut album of songs ‘Jelly Legged’ – drawn from a rich well of personal experiences – in 2014 . It immediately pricked up the ears of the Music Cognoscenti, with two tracks getting heavy rotation on the National Broadcaster, RTE. From this, Karrie was invited to Tour with Declan O’Rourke, Mick Flannery and Mary Coughlan…up to and including a ‘guest’ live RTE Radio spot with Declan O’Rourke (Galileo) and the RTE Concert Orchestra in the NCH, Dublin. Her second album, ‘Perpetual Motion’ brought further acclaim from musicians. The current selection of tunes, about to be released on HyperTension Music in Germany, was the result of a collaboration between Karrie and Jimmy. The idea was to record and perform established tunes by their favourite artists: reflecting the Zeitgeist, and using only the ‘bare bones’ instrumentation, thus highlighting Karrie’s remarkable voice. Karrie and Jimmy have just completed recording and filming with the Irish Chamber Orchestra (at their invite) for imminent release. The CD version of the ‘Home Thoughts’ album (HyperTension GmbH) is released in Ireland and the UK on August 28th

He has since released a second album of genre- defying Americana with Bennett and now his first new music in almost a year becomes available on the day he performs for Green Note. From 2007 until 2019 Gow’s songs were central to Case Hardin… one of the UK’s best loved Americana/ Alt. Country bands. LUKE TUCHSCHERER (pronounced Tuck-Shearer) is an acclaimed British singer/songwriter. He released his solo acoustic record, Carousel, through Clubhouse Records on 4 October 2019, his fourth album in five years. Previous releases include 2018’s Pieces and Shadows EP, 2017’s Always Be True, and his 2014 debut, You Get So Alone At Times That It Just Makes Sense. SAM COE: Following previous critical acclamation with her band, The Long Shadows, 2020 sees Sam Coe heading in a fresh musical direction as a solo artist, having just released her debut solo album “Comeback Queen”. Sam Coe creates gritty, dark country music – honest songs that transform into raucous and chaotic sound, weathered with a throwback vibe. Refusing to comply with a traditional country sound, “Comeback Queen” is a cornucopia of noise which wouldn’t exist without a traditional country influence. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Brandi Carlile, Margo Price and Emmylou Harris, Sam has been working on new material during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the follow up to “Comeback Queen” due early 2021.

THE MARRIAGE: Brought together by a shared passion for song writing and a constantly overlapping and intertwined musical career, Americana duo, The Marriage embodies the beauty that can be achieved through the collaboration of two brilliant musical minds. Kirsten and Dave have been surrounded by music their entire lives, with Dave first picking up a guitar at the age of 7 and being signed by a major label at 15 and Kirsten spending her Summers in Nashville with her father Stuart Adamson, founder of Skids and Big Country. Both have been playing in touring bands since their teens. The name, ‘The Marriage’, For both Kirsten and Dave, whilst having many connotations, is more symbolic of their respective relationships with music. For each, music has come close to obsession as they have soldiered on despite the disappointment rife within the industry. Music represents their lives’ true loves and this is clearly evident in the compilations and deliveries of their songs. Their intimate and eloquent lyrics weave stories of love, loss and life’s complexity and their powerful and flawless vocals compliment each other in beautifully intertwined harmonies that mesmerise the listener. The Marriage is the perfect union of two incredible musical souls at the end of this journey. GINGER COWGIRL: While a taste for many styles of music is evident in Nashville-based Ginger Cowgirl’s recent release, their approach is nevertheless rooted in the tradition of classic country honesty, wit and soul. Throw in some virtuoso Nashville pickers, worldly lyrics and frontwoman Stacy Antonel’s eclectic, jazzy vocals, and you have a unique brand of Americana music. The core of Ginger Cowgirl is California-born songwriter and vocalist Stacy Antonel; she’s a classically trained pianist from the age of 7, holds a degree from UC Berkeley, and got her start in the music industry singing jingles while living in Buenos Aires, Argentina. HANNAH ROSE PLATT is an enchanting, talented storyteller and multi-instrumentalist described as the UK’s answer to Emmylou Harris, tinged with the dark storytelling prowess of Nick Cave. She was recently signed to European Independent Record Label ‘Continental Song City’, and is currently finishing record her third release, produced by UK writing royalty, Ed Harcourt. Platt was born and raised in Liverpool UK, where she wrote her first songs and played her first shows and is now based in London after working hard to become an established figure on the UK music scene. She recorded her debut offering ‘Portraits’ in Nashville in 2015 where she worked with some of the industry’s leading names, Grammy award-winning musicians Mark Fain, (Ricky Skaggs, Dolly Parton) Stuart Duncan (Emmylou Harris, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss) and Andrea Zonn (James Taylor). ‘Portraits’ was released independently to widespread critical acclaim, receiving 5star and 4star reviews across the board after which, she was invited to legendary BBC broadcaster Bob Harris’ home to record a live session for his ‘Under the Apple Tree’ youtube channel.

Suggested donation £10, but any donation will be much appreciated. An Under The Apple Tree Takeover, hosted by ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris. FEATURING… ROBBIE CAVANAGH: A self confessed devotee of ‘real music’ Robbie Cavanagh isn’t defined by genre. He performs unscrubbed, self penned tales of heartbreak, loss, love and discovery and when he puts pen to paper, he lives by his own words. ‘The more you wrestle with an idea, the more contrived it becomes’. Robbie writes with emotion, honesty and most importantly, instinct. The past 3 years were spent performing around the UK, Europe and USA, as a headline artist, and as support. Robbie completed a headline tour days before lockdown kicked in. Radio 2’s Bob Harris described Robbie as ‘one of my absolute favourite UK grass roots artists’. DEMI MARRINER: Demi Marriner is a girl with many strings to her bow each as unique and strong as the last. Armed with a powerful repertoire and a stack of notebooks full of even more ideas, Demi Marriner is a songwriter well worth keeping track of. Demi’s passion and emotion is so contagious, it is almost impossible to not be captivated from the offset. Riding shotgun alongside her unique, outstanding songwriting are Demi’s powerful, emotive live performances. Demi’s confidence and professionalism on stage sparkle even more than her guitar strap and matching capo. Demi’s debut record is set for release early next year. JONNY MORGAN: Jonny Morgan is an Alternative Indie Americana Folk singer/songwriter who clearly struggles having to describe what specific genre he falls into. Having grown up regularly visiting the US, Jonny is infatuated with the sounds of Americana, blues and grassroots music, developing an unsubtle love for the genre. Jonny aspires to make music that is vulnerable, incorporating the real, raw emotions of everyday life into his gritty acoustic singer/songwriter style. Unsigned and fearlessly independent, Jonny endeavours to take his sound back to basics, reflecting on the reason he felt the pull to create music in the first place. His music combines his talent for vocalising the weight of relationships and life experiences with poetic lyrics and warm, layered, ambient sounds.
