This meet up aims to explore the experiences of black women as it pertains to mental health while creating a safe space to share the ways in which we strive to manage our own. As a collective community, we will be exploring methods by which we can better support, navigate, and guide each other through our relationships with self & others, while discussing sexuality, love, religion & the church, and many more topics.
I have personally been inspired by numerous women in literature, visual art, music, and other multi-media forms, and am looking forward to sharing with you, as well as listening to the things that also fuel your inspiration. During our time together, we will also challenge one another to express our experiences by way of creative writing exercises, thus engaging in conversation to uplift, challenge, love, give, and ultimately share.
Not only are black women suffering greatly from mental health illnesses, we are also doing so silently whilst having images of ourselves re-imagined as strong and sturdy for the amusement of others. In order to disrupt this cycle, we need to create spaces for black women to feel comfortable discussing their mental health, away from the fear of judgement or mockery.
