Ian Thorton-Trump - The Politics of Cyber

Talk Synopsis: We live in a world of competing nation states, proxies of those states and non-nation state actors. This competition manifests itself in any number of ways – conflict, sanctions, restrictions, embargo, assassinations, etc. Clausewitz's suggested “War as politics by other means” so, the natural conclusion is cyber espionage, cyber-attacks and cyber influence operations, are merely manifestations of a policy clash between two or more competing powers or proxies. Or are they? Join Ian Thornton-Trump for an exploration of how nation state Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actors have embraced cyber to further national goals through covert or overt means. Ian’s presentation identifies the strategies and legal counter measures available to nation states to defend themselves from APT attackers.

Bio: Ian Thornton-Trump, CD, CEH, CNDA, CySA+, CPM, BA is an ITIL certified IT professional with 25 years of experience in IT security and information technology. From 1989 to 1992, Ian served with the Canadian Forces (CF), Military Intelligence Branch; in 2002, he joined the CF Military Police Reserves and retired as a Public Affairs Officer in 2013. After a year with the RCMP as a Criminal Intelligence Analyst, Ian worked as a cyber security analyst/consultant for multi-national insurance, banking and regional health care. His most memorable role was being a project manager, specialising in cyber security for the Canadian Museum of Human Rights. Today, as Head of Cyber Security for AmTrust International, a subsidiary of AmTrust Financial Services Inc (AFSI), Ian has deep experience with the threats facing small, medium and enterprise businesses. His research and experience have made him a sought-after cyber security consultant specialising in cyber threat intelligence programs for small, medium and enterprise organisations. In his spare time, he teaches cyber security and IT business courses for CompTIA as part of their global faculty and advises The Swisscross Foundation, an independent and impartial humanitarian non-profit organisation on matters of cyber security.

James Ogden - Ee By Packet Filter ! ( eBPF For Security Monitoring)

Talk synopsis: Revisiting the BSides Leeds talk of the same name in a shorter format for the evening (so you can get to the pub quicker!) Explore some of the many uses of eBPF, a feature of the Linux kernel that allows for system-wide function tracing with minimal overhead. Discover hidden threats such as malware and rootkits, observe network connections, trace calls to library functions and more. Demos presented and example code provided to show the power of eBPF based tools in action!

Bio: James Ogden has been working with Linux and Unix for nearly 20 years. He is interested in rootkits and malware. He likes to program in C and Assembly Language. He lives between Leeds and Harrogate in the Wharfe Valley. He sometimes refers to himself in the third person.
