London DevOps #20

  • Sep 7, 2016 · 6:15 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

This meetup is hosted at IBM Southbank. Building security requires to provide information so please make sure you answer the security question!
We're giving away a free ticket to OSCON Europe!!!

6.20pm - Arrival, Drinks

6:45pm - Welcome Talk

7:00pm - Talk 1

Learning from Config Management: Thom May - Chef

Config Management is a go-to tool for most engineers, but there are some challenges that are better solved with a different approach. We'll look at some of those challenges, and then investigate Habitat, a new approach to application deployment, configuration and life cycle management.

7:30pm - Talk 2

Patterns to scale performance, reliability and productivity: Hamed Silatani - IG

At IG we learned that when engineering teams and management care about performance and reliability and trust their operations team, DevOps good practices become a natural consequence. The difficult part was to get people curious and care about performance and reliability in a relatively sizeable multinational organisation.

8:00pm - Talk 3

Monitoring for Microservices 101: David Gildeh - Dataloop.IO

Monitoring one application can be difficult, but scaling this up to dozens or hundreds can quickly lead to chaos. David is the CEO and Founder of Dataloop.IO and will talk about getting the basics right around monitoring microservices.

8:30pm - Food, More Drinks and socialising.

Another great meet up. Habitat looks interesting. talk was informative and funny. Hamed talk regarding patterns to scale had good insights.

Yes. The whole choreography versus orchestration idea has a lot of merit, although I do wonder about security. But then as an ex-oldschool sysadmin now security bod, I find the whole attention to security in DevOps to be somewhat deficient at present.

      1 · September 11

    • Kevin T.

Gulraj, totally agree. Devops: what's security? It's deeper than that though. I've had devs hand over a maven repo for me (ops) to build for reasons you'll see in a minute. Mvn clean install (yeah, not build) and lo and behold 5000 dependencies from random dodgy corners of the internet. And the next dev to say just do curl <random repo from some Russian hacker> | bash on a production server gets his fingers removed, slowly, one by one

Fantastic venue. Shame about the short supply of pizza, but not the end of the world. The refurbed presentation space is marvellous. Nice view of the river and South Bank promenade, too.

Apologies, I broke my elbow yesterday and it hurts too much to travel to the venue. Michel

Hope you get well soon! Sounds painful :/

High quality meetup as all the London DevOps ones. Thanks to Organisers for their great work.

Damn, got the email saying I'd got to the top of the list after I had left for the evening. Gutted :-). Oh well, next time

    September 7

  • Don C.

Would there be a possibility of audio streaming in future meet ups? I know, right. It's for us who can't afford to attend and to have unlimited data in mobile. No biggie if not possible, I'll wait for the videos in FB.

Something has just come up and won't be able to make it, unfortunately. Can't change my RSVP here on the website to free up my space, so perhaps you guys can change on your ending somehow? Sorry again.

    September 7

  • Alex J.

Freeing up my space also - sorry about that!

      Hi Firat,

      September 5

    • Matt S.

The event is full, so you'll only get a place if there are sufficient cancellations between now and the event, sorry!

      September 5

  • Mo

Hi Marc, this wasn't a requirement before, I believe it would have been more appropriate to at least suggest you will do so before doing it, courtesy??

    1 · August 30

    • Marc C.

      Hi Derek and Jasmine,
I'm afraid you missed it, everyone else has given us the necessary details, except a group of seven persons that hasn't, including yourselves.

      August 30

    • DerekT

No problem. If there are enough cancelations I might see you at this one. If not I'll learn to read before the next event opens up!

      August 30

  • Koz G.

Unfortunately I cannot make this event now and have freed up my invite

    August 30

  • Marc C.

    Hi everyone,
In order to allocate seats I have moved to "NO" anyone that either hasn't provided their full name or don't have their full name on their meetup profile.
You can only go back to the wait list at the back of the queue if you provide your full name when changing your RSVP.
We're doing this to ensure that all people that provided their details correctly as required by IBM security get a place.

    August 30

    • Matt S.

Hi TT, apologies, we'll add you back on the list - please note that you will need to arrive with matching ID on the door. These are the venue's rules, not ours by the way. :/

      August 30

    • Marc C.

      Hi TT,
No opinion whatsoever about your name to be honest, I have no time to do so :)
You will need to present an ID at the venue, as requested by IBM, we are not putting those rules in.
Really hope to see you there! I have a dog too so plenty of conversation ;)

      August 30

  • Deeessemm

There is a rail strike again on this day

    August 26

  • Gulraj R.

Well damn. That filled up fast.

    August 25

  • FIRAT A.

i would like to attend this event, how can i add this event ?

    August 24

    • Matt S.

Wait for RSVPs to open, this will be very soon
