Let's meet up and hack on Emacs!

Bodil and I discussed this and decided it would be a good idea to have a couple of short talks, 10-15 minutes each but spend most of our time solving Emacs problems for people.

This could be anything. How do I best do python? How do I best use Clojure? How do I rewrite Facebook with Elnode? What's the best way of using packages?

Hello, how do you all feel about having a mail list to discuss meetup related issues rather than using this system? I mean, it's May and we're using April's announcement page.

There's a discussion page on meetup that we're not using. I'd suggest using that. Not sure why people are stuck on this.

After the discussion on Twitter, 20th of May is good & available. So do you want to create the invite/announcement for it? Thanks

  • dotemacs

Hello, finally I got it confirmed! The room is available for the whole week starting from May 12th, from 18:00-21:00. Please tell me what day would suit you. And sincere apologies for the delay.

    May 8, 2014

    • Mickey

Not that this should influence anybody, but I am not available from the 14th to the 17th.

      May 8, 2014

  • Nic F.

We need to organize the next one - so are we doing it there? Do you want me to MoJ? When do we want to do it?

How about the week of May 12th?

Hello, the reason I've been quiet is because I've been chasing. So the outcome is: I'll know on Tuesday.

      May 2, 2014

    • dotemacs

Sorry for this delay, but the decision doesn't rest with me. I'm pretty confident that the venue will be available, just not sure about the date as it needs to be booked via an elaborate system, involving the tossing of dice, chicken bones and super secure calendaring system.

I'm interested in the integration between Emacs and IPython Notebook using this package http://tkf.github.io/emacs-ipython-notebook/ I had some trouble getting it to work with the latest version of IPython though. Has anyone had any experience with this? If so, I'd love to pick your brains at the next meetup. Thanks!

    April 14, 2014

    • Neale S.

I believe that there have been substantial api changes in IPython that have broken e.i.n. It needs a lot of rework unfortunately, the author says it won't be quick....

One thing that Ali raised during the discussion, when he mentioned showing Emacs to somebody new is that it puts them off when you explain that you have to use Lisp to extend it. Jay Fields in this presentation on adopting Clojure mentions something like this (I'm paraphrasing it): "... and you get to have a small team of experts... who know Emacs & Clojure". Which I think is fine, you can't have everybody using it and being proficient in it. But at the same time, I do think that good documentation should be available as much as possible and that community should be welcoming to the newcomers. I guess the meetup was part of that effort.

I found it a really relaxed meetup. It was just like old friends. Nice.

Agreed. It was a really fun event. Thanks all.

Sadly my attempt to use org-gcal just now has failed so I am definitely looking forward to the next one.

are people planning to bring food or eat before/afterward together?

    April 9, 2014

    • R P.

Pizza was provided - courtesy of Nic!

      April 10, 2014

    • Nic F.

I clearly needed to tell people food was provided. I am left with a ton of pizza and am now being told off for leaving it in the kitchen. Sigh.

Great fun! I look forward to the next one

Great meetup - seeing other people's workflows really made me think about how to use emacs even more effectively

Everybody who cancelled just now is bound by the traditional Emacs meetup rule (which I invented just now) to host a meetup :)

Sorry for the late notice folks, it seems that wife and kids needing to infect developers is a spreading problem!

    April 9, 2014

  • Kris J.

Sorry folks, I'm going to have to bail. The wife & kids have all come down with something, so I need to go home and catch it myself. :-(

I am confused as to why you have asked me for a real name. I assure you I am really am called Dominic Steinitz as it says in my profile.

    April 8, 2014

    • Andrea T.

I too have received the same message twice. I wonder if it has anything to do with the real name not being in the email address?

      April 8, 2014

    • Nic F.

I sent a message to everyone because I couldn't filter it to "just the people without a real name". I don't even care if you don't use your real name, but using a single name or a word that clearly isn't your name (like "hacker") isn't acceptable to the building people.

Apologies for those of you who got this who shouldn't have.

I could spend 5-10 minutes going through how I added support for a new internal testing language in compilation mode and a language mode.

Obviously, it's re-inventing the wheel most of the time, but what do you do when there is no wheel...

    Is there interest in that?

    March 25, 2014

    • Kieran B.

Change of plans - I'm not going to be able to attend :(

      April 7, 2014

    • Bodil S.

      Too bad. :(

      April 7, 2014

  • Dominic S.

That would be great. I think people demoing their workflows would also be good. I mostly use the Haskell bindings, ESS, magit, and org-mode but the latter in what I am sure is sub-optimal way. I also use the python and octave bindings. I've tried using mobile org mode but with limited success.

I'd be happy to share how we use emacs for Haskell.

      I'm in for that.

An idea might be sessions on how to do development of X language using emacs. For example, in our place I do mostly C++ but also Haskell and occasionally Java. so a quick chat on how to do these. Eg C++ and gdb debugger etc.

    1 · March 19, 2014

    • Nic F.

well, that's the idea. We can ask who wants to learn about what? and maybe there are 5 python people, 5 java people and 15 people who don't understand package config... whatever... they can all go off in little groups and learn and hack.
