Donald Curtis is a former Vim user who defected to Emacs while working in academics because he wanted to learn functional programming. In 2011 he received a Ph.D. in Computer Science and has been working in industry for the past 4 years after a two year stint teaching.

You've probably used his software if you've used MELPA (https://melpa.org/).
