Gov Design Meetup #4: Large scale infrastructure

Details

Large scale infrastructure

In September, we’re hosting our 4th meetup during London Design Festival on 19 September. Every year London Design Festival (http://www.londondesignfestival.com/) showcases product and interior design. We think there is a gap in showcasing service design, especially the great work happening in service design across the public sector.

There is a rich history of public sector design in the UK. In the 1950s, the UK had the largest architectural practice in the world and it was in local government — the London County Council Architects' Department. The public sector design work from the fields of transportation and architecture during the 1950s-1960s are iconic like Margaret Calvert and Jock Kinneir’s British road signage system (https://designmuseum.org/designers/jock-kinneir-and-margaret-calvert) and Design Research Unit’s British Rail identity system.

We’re inviting experts to speak about the historical role of design in large scale public infrastructure systems. Speakers will cover themes like the road signage system, transportation, and architecture.

Speakers:

1 — Tom Cordell, Director of ‘Utopia London (http://www.utopialondon.com/)’
2 — Paul Mijksenaar, Designer and founder of Mijksenaar (http://www.mijksenaar.com/) wayfinding experts
3 — Anna Kinneir, Co-founder of the Jock Kinneir Library (http://jockkinneirlibrary.org/)

The agenda for the evening:

6:00 Doors open
6:30 Introduction
6:40 Talks from our speakers
7:40 Panel conversation and time for additional questions
8:00 Wrap up and move on to the pub

Join us afterwards for drinks at a pub close by!

The event will be hosted by Government Digital Service.

We hope you can make it!
