Our distinguished speakers for the evening will be:
> VoltDB's David Rolfe, Director of Solutions Engineering (EMEA)
> Oracle's Chris Jenkins, Senior Director, In-Memory Technology
> GridGain's Akmal Chaudhri, Apache Ignite Technology Evangelist

Agenda:

  • 5:45 p.m. -- Pizza, beer & networking
  • 6:00 p.m. -- Talk 1: VoltDB
  • 6:40 p.m. -- Talk 2: Oracle
  • 7:20 p.m. -- Talk 3: GridGain
  • 8:00 p.m. -- Closing remarks; raffle drawings.

Location:
China Exchange

Getting on with it, let's take a closer look at each talk!

>> David's talk is titled: "Why would I need another database? - What evaluators need to consider in 2018"

Abstract: Over the past decade we've see a revolution in database-like technology, and have seen the number of choices go from a handful to over a hundred.

Why did this happen? What new opportunities do we have? Is there an downside to all this?

Most importantly: How do I pick a database technology in 2018?

>> Chris' talk is titled: "TimesTen IMDB 18.1: Scaleout Mode Performance Tuning (Part 1)"
Abstract (in his own words):

This is the first talk in a series focussing on how to optimise application and database performance when using TimesTen Scaleout mode.

We will start with a brief overview of the new 'Scaleout' deployment mode introduced in the TimesTen 18.1 release. Next I will describe the various factors that affect application and database performance when using TimesTen Scaleout.

Finally, in this first talk I will be focusing on the impact that the network has on overall performance and looking at ways to optimise that from a hardware, architectural and application implementation perspective.

Future talks in this series will focus on other aspects of performance such as:

  • Data distribution choices
  • SQL tuning and optimisation
  • Application optimisation

>> Akmal's talk is titled: "Distributed Database DevOps Dilemmas? Kubernetes to the rescue!"
Abstract: Distributed databases can make so many things easier for a developer, but not always for DevOps. Kubernetes has come to the rescue with an easy application orchestration!

It is straightforward to do the orchestration leaning on relational databases as a data layer. However, it is more difficult to do the same when a distributed SQL database or other kind of distributed storage is used instead.

In this presentation, attendees will learn how Kubernetes can orchestrate a distributed database like Apache Ignite, in particular:

  • Cluster Assembling - database nodes auto-discovery in Kubernetes.
  • Database Resilience - automated horizontal scalability.
  • Database Availability - what’s the role of Kubernetes and the database.
  • Utilizing both RAM and disk - set up Apache Ignite in a way to get in-memory performance with the durability of disk.
