An Introduction to Julia — Free, hands-on training

Details

We are pleased to announce a free, hand-on training workshop on Julia on Tuesday, the 20th of March. Using interactive notebooks, the workshop will teach you the how to use the language and its ecosystem, and will aim to equip you to work productively in Julia by its conclusion. No prior Julia knowledge is necessary, but programming experience in any other language will be helpful. Even if you have programmed in Julia earlier, the in-depth treatment of the subject by the experts might still be useful. Please also forward this event to friends or colleagues who you think might benefit. Topics covered will include:

  • Strings
  • Data Structures
  • Loops and Conditionals
  • Functions
  • Packages
  • Plotting
  • Multiple Dispatch
  • Basic Linear Algebra
  • Performance tips

We have a lot of material to get through, so we will aim to start promptly at 6. Please try and arrive a few minutes early to register. There will be Pizzas, and we will retire to a nearby pub after the event.

The workshop will be conducted by Malcolm Sherrington and Avik Sengupta. Malcolm and Avik are both long time Julia enthusiasts, and authors of books about the language. Apart from a storied career in finance and technology, Malcolm has organised the Julia user group in London since 2013. Avik is currently the VP of Engineering at Julia Computing.

A follow up session covering more advanced topics will be presented on Monday, the 16th of April, 2018. Watch this space for further announcements.

• What to bring
Please bring your own laptop. Wifi connection will be available at the venue, and participants will be able to run the code online, using notebooks on Juliabox.
