Kafka as a Platform: the Ecosystem from the Ground Up
Robin Moffatt, Confluent

Kafka has become a key data infrastructure technology, but what actually is it?

In this talk, we’ll look at the entire streaming platform provided by Apache Kafka and the Confluent community components. We’ll build up from topics, partitioning, replication, and low-level pub/sub APIs. We’ll layer on more sophisticated stream processing and integration APIs. By the time we’re done, the open-source project we thought was Big Data’s answer to message queues will have become an enterprise-grade streaming platform, all in about 30 minutes.

Key takeaways:

  • Solid introduction to Kafka and its surrounding ecosystem
  • Tips building systems using the appropriate Kafka APIs

Robin is a Senior Developer Advocate at Confluent, as well as an Oracle ACE Director (Alumnus). He has been speaking at conferences since 2009 including QCon, Devoxx, Strata, Kafka Summit, and Øredev. You can find many of his talks online at http://rmoff.net/talks/, and his blog articles at http://cnfl.io/rmoff and http://rmoff.net/. Outside of work, Robin enjoys running, drinking good beer, and eating fried breakfasts—although generally not at the same time.

Microservices & Team Culture
Lukonde Mwila, Entelect

Microservices will probably go down as one of the top buzzwords of the last decade. When something is buzzing, it's adoption rate is usually quite high in the tech space. That's not necessarily a bad thing, unless there hasn't been enough homework done on what the implications are, especially when it comes to team structure and culture.
In this talk, I will cover the types of changes that need to take place within a team in order for there to be a successful adoption of microservices. Some of these team shifts include independence, autonomy, technological freedom and deployment streams to name a few. These various team changes also present challenges of their own which will also be covered as part of the session.

Key takeaways:

  • Understand how to structure your team using Conway's Law
  • Learn the impact of technical changes on team culture
  • Understanding the different types of ownership for technical teams
    and balancing these approaches

Lukonde is a senior software engineer at Entelect Software and is an AWS Container Hero. He consults in the financial services sector specialising in cloud and DevOps engineering, cloud architecture designs and cloud security at an enterprise level in the AWS landscape. He has a passion for sharing knowledge through various mediums such as meetups and tech conferences, as well as writing technical articles.
