Where's the one-click install?

Presented by Diane Wallace

Lot's of web hosts now offer one-click installation of WordPress, but what if your chosen host doesn't, or if you want more control over your configuration? What if you've used the one-click, but it's installed WordPress in a subdirectory and you want your blog to exist in the site root?

You can do it all yourself and it's probably easier than you think.

In this talk I will be taking you step-by-step through installing WordPress on your web server and setting up your WordPress site.

Diane Wallace is a freelance web and WordPress developer, living and working in Camden Town, London. She is passionate about creating beautiful, simple, user friendly designs using clean, semantic code. She is also very approachable and happy to talk at length about WordPress and web design (you have been warned).

Introduction to Woo Commerce

Presented by Jamie Marsland

In this presentation I’ll show you how easy it is to set up an online store with WooCommerce. I’ll be building a store from scratch ‘live’ in only 20 mins. I’ll show you how to set up your shop, add products (simple, virtual, grouped, affiliate and variable), add product galleries, add sections to your shop, set up checkout, how to take payment and more. We’ve been running WooCommerce on pootlepress.com for the past year and I’ll give you some tips and tricks on how to optimise a WooCommerce store.

Jamie Marsland is the founder of PootlePress. At PootlePress they've trained over 2500 people 'face to face' on WordPress (and WooCommerce) over the past 4 years. They've also an online WordPress training Academy with over 750 members. Jamie does a great deal of development with WooThemes products and have now released 20 plugins for the Canvas Theme Framework. PootlePress are also about to release their first WooCommerce plugin.

Using WordPress for 'esports'

Presented by Dan Westall

A few months ago Dan and a few others started http://exodusesports.com. They used WordPress, which allowed us to get off the ground quickly, taking advantage of a lot of newer technologies ranging from the new WordPress restful api with angular to websockets for realtime match results, but not forgetting the basics including extending the XMLRPC interface, custom post types and posts 2 posts plugin to link it all together.

Dan will be talking about building it, the problems, the solutions and were they are going next.

Dan Westall is a web developer by day, co-founder of webmatics. Speaks CSS3, HTML, PHP, JS and a little English. Knew his dreams of being a journalist were shattered when he realised he couldn’t spell good. Current hobbies include learning to play the banjo and drinking. Often together. Also has a budgie called Joey. No joke.

Attendees need to be over the age of 18 to attend this meetup as we sometimes offer beer to kick off the night!

    Hi everyone,

I am working on my first ever website/blog. It is thrilling and exciting. But I keep hitting a road block with my thumbnails. I am having trouble with my images. The thumbnails to my posts do not load. Instead they have that evil blue box with question mark. I tried to download Post Thumbnail Editor but still could not figure it out.

Can anyone help advise who to resolve this tormenting issue? It has been the death of me.

    Many thanks in advance!

Following on from the point made that Filezilla is now too insecure to use because it stores passwords in plain text, here is an interesting article suggesting encrypted methods aren't that much better: http://goo.gl/WFtCaU

One of the things I love about #WPLDN and I remember this from attending in the past is the ability to network . Its been mentioned below but I just wanted to re-iterate that the speakers may not suit everyone. I think the organisers do a fantastic "UNPAID" job in creating an environment where we can connect. With that said if any Wordpress developers are looking for additional workload please connect with me. I've been turning work away because I have not found quality developers and refuse to outsource to certain geographical regions.

    2 · August 29, 2014

  • Nigel M.

Hot and stuffy room, warm beer. Talks of varying quality, from blatant sales, through very basic to overly detailed. Sorry you asked for my opinion.

    August 28, 2014

    • Steve W.

Wouldnt catch me doing the Ice bucket challenge - https://www.facebook.c...

      August 28, 2014

    • Nigel M.

      Okay I'll sponsor the ice....

      August 28, 2014

  • Kay W.

I think the 'beginner' sesh was far from being beginner. Loved the Woocommerce talk. It would be good to hear from people that have found a great theme or plugin and want to show everyone why. Thank you to the organisers for their hard work and sponsors for the food, drink and venue. Can I suggest that you shut the door and put a sign up saying "queue here till we come get you". I saw basically everyone come in and get sent away.

    1 · August 28, 2014

  • Diane W.

Thanks for another great evening at WordPress London :)

    3 · August 28, 2014

  • Ryan J.

Awesome as usual - great talks covering many bases, and great to see some of the advanced techniques used, as I think this is where WordPress really is making the difference and pushing the boundaries of what is capable and proving that it is not just another blogging tool. Great to see how far WooCommerce has come (I last used it 18 months ago when it was a pig to code themes for before they re-architectured how it integrated with themes) - might dabble with it again for a personal project.

    4 · August 28, 2014

    • Ryan J.

Yeah, the site I was building at the time had gone so far down the original route that when WooCommerce updated it was decided not to update on the deployed site at the time because of the extra dev time needed (it was a complex site) even though the update came with enhanced functionality and bugfixes. I stopped working with them not long after that!

      August 28, 2014

    • Milos S.

We wanted to build a marketplace on top of it, but during the prototyping stage ran into random issues like orders being cancelled by the system!? Due to time pressure went down a different route. A lot of the custom functionality I worked on is now available as an extension which is making me curious to give it another go.

      August 28, 2014

  • Steve W.

It was a great event, good to connect, speakers were good and although I understood most of what they were saying already I still took some nuggets that have helped me. Enjoyed networking with such awesome people and looking forward to next month.

    3 · August 28, 2014

  • Richard A.

Timing good for me as although I have deliberately avoided doing ecommerce sites I have a client whose enthusaism for me to build him one is only matched by his business incompetence, so Woo-commerce seems like a quick, low risk solution.

PS I drank all of Nigel's warm beer.

I agree and several other people around me said the room was far to hot. I mentioned this to Dan and he opened some windows. Free drinks and pizza - hard to complain. The talks are not for everyone as we are all at different levels of knowledge. Personally I see it as an opportunity to network and if there's a talk I'm interested in its a bonus. Well done guys

Hi Ksenia, we try to make it so there is something for everyone - last night we had a few beginners talks and one technical one for the more advanced. We're open to suggestions of other things you'd like to hear about or people you'd like to hear speak.

I received this odd email from a recruitment agent yesterday. Has he been smoking the good stuff or what?

    "Hi Chris,
As you know, not too long ago Wordpress was one of the biggest CMS around. It was so big that there weren’t even enough Developers available to pick up the work. However, the boom of its popularity was only equalled by the speed of its decline. Whether this was due to the fact that companies found a better CMS or had to switch to a new one simply due to the fact that they couldn’t find a Wordpress specialist – no one knows.
    ..."

What have they switched to then? 1&1 MyWebsite?

      2 · August 22, 2014

    • Steve W.

I always get people telling me that wordpress is crap or "dead" Truth is I used to hate it myself. A Self taught HTML and PHP coder who would convince people that wordpress was not worth using, then one day a good friend worth about 15 million invited me to his online course. I picked his website apart for hours telling myself how shit it was. Basic wordpress template, not secure crap plugins etc ... Thing is, I was skint and he was not. Who was the bigger fool. The one using a system that owns 20% of the internet or the one picking it apart whilst eating last nights pizza ?

I know only develop on wordpress, hell I don't even code anymore. I have changed my life and hundreds of business owners because we now create systems that just work, not messing about and no trying to be clever. I know wordpress isnt the answer to everything but its bloody close :)

We're a little food hub looking to build a community of artisanal food businesses. We believe in working together, sharing experiences and doing what you love.

We're looking for someone to help us move our site to WP and help us in the next stage of our journey: building an online platform where food businesses can hang out and learn from each other.

Have a look at our website: www.kitchentableprojects.com and if you like what you see and believe in what we do, please come and talk to us on the 27th!
