✍️ - How to build websites that stand the test of time
One of the major concerns for clients wanting a website is the longevity of that site. They want to clearly know how long their investment will last in order to budget correctly & get the most from their money. I have seen a lot of WordPress sites over the last 12 years or so, many of which have not & would not stand the test of time.
In this talk, I am going to give away the secrets (not really!) of how I write code & build sites that do stand the test of time.
🗣 - Presented by Mark Wilkinson, co-owner of Highrise Digital. A WordPress development agency building blazing fast, easy to use websites that stand the test of time. Mark focuses on back-end development & loves tinkering with WordPress code. In his spare time, he is a keen golfer & enjoys a good run around his home town of Leyland. ✍️ - So how do I know if my WordPress website is accessible?
There are many resources available to help designers, developers & content authors create accessible websites. We could look at the full WCAG2.1 specifications, but in many cases people need to understand all the accessibility concepts before it’s possible to make sense of it all. Individual blog posts can help demystify these accessibility guidelines, but these resources are fragmented. How about if there was a quick guide to the most common & most pressing accessibility issues that consisted of a series of yes/no questions that anyone could answer about a website?
In this presentation I run through just such a list of questions & discuss easy to follow techniques that people can use to test their own websites for accessibility.
🗣 - Presented by Graham Armfield, Web Accessibility Consultant with his own company Coolfields Consulting. He works with organisations to help them improve the accessibility of their websites - testing the websites for accessibility & advising designers & developers on how to fix issues found. He has written detailed training courses on accessibility for developers which he presents on a regular basis. He's also a WordPress developer & has built many accessible WordPress websites for clients. He has contributed to the Make WordPress Accessible Team & spoken on accessibility at WordCamps & WordPress meetups. Outside of work you're likely to find him playing his guitar, recording his next album or (wishing he was) performing at local open mic evenings.
