Re: [ljc] Advice, please, for a new RecWorks recruiter

Hi Bryon,

The good news is that the rest of the industry has set the bar really low for you.  While developers have a low opinion of recruiters, they also recognize how important they are.  Shining as a good recruiter is not difficult, it requires just one things: knowing something.

If you know the difference between Javascript and Java then you're half way there.
  1. Know what things are different.  For example: Java and Javascript.
  2. Know when things are related: For example: DI, IOC, Spring, AngularJS and CDI.
  3. Know when things share a space.  For example: Camel, Mule and Spring Integration.
That way you can match candidates to job openings.  You can know that if a job spec asks for one thing, another may be relevant.

Here's a game to play.  Get a couple of skills and technology lists, like these:
Write down all the different technologies onto post it notes and then create an affinitiy map for them all.

That will help you start to see how it all fits together.

Instead of getting the list from the web you can lift them from job descriptions and candidate CVs.  It will help you find matches that are not immediately obvious.

Regards,

Ged

Hi guys,

I’m writing today with a message from one of my RecWorks colleagues, Bryon,

"Barry suggested writing to you to get your thoughts and advice on something. My name is Byron Donovan, I am the newest recruiter of the RecWorks team. I am quickly learning and understanding Java from some of the seniors here but I’d love to get some advice from Java developers in the industry on what to do and not to do as a new recruiter entering the tech industry. The guys at RecWorks have told me that typically recruiters have a bad reputation, so I’m keen to understand what I can do to make sure I can do things well.

If any of you have any advice please contact me directly or just reply to the group. I’ll be along to a few LJC events soon so if you see me please come and say hi!

Thanks,

Byron”

As Byron says, he’d be happy to receive feedback via the list - or feel free to send comments off-list using my email as I’ll be happy to relay them to Byron.

Many thanks!

Maggie
