Jewelry & Metalcraft Shop: Hand Tools Certification (METALS 100-101)

The Jewelry and Metalcraft shop at TinkerMill offers regular classes to TinkerMill members to become certified to use the shop tools.

This is a combined class that covers:

METALS 100: An introduction to the Jewelry and Metalcraft ShopCost: no charge
Prerequisite: none
Duration: 1 hour

Metals 100 describes the tool groups in the shop, shop safety, rules and etiquette, and the types of projects suited to this shop. You will gain an understanding of the types of classes offered, certifications, and how you can take advantage of the shop's tools. You will be introduced to the shop website - a continually developing portal of vetted resources for self-study and collaboration.

Metals 100 is a prerequisite for Metals 101.

METALS 101: Fabrication using Basic Hand ToolsCost: $20.00 ($35.00 for non-members) includes materials
Prerequisite: METALS 100
Duration: 2 hr. 30 minutes or more *

Metals 101 certifies you to use the shop's hand tools independently and includes:

• Overview of acceptable materials: Examples of metal, forms and fabrication, and jewelry components that can be made at the bench
• Instruction on tools, safety and usage
• Hands-on trials
• Completion of the METALS 101 Certification Sampler project
• List of Metals 101 type projects
• Self-study resources

Metals 101 is a prerequisite for METALS 102 (Power tools), METALS 201 (Torch) and many other shop certification classes. (Note: While this class is a good overview of the shop, proper tool use and tool safety it should not be considered a comprehensive metalsmithing techniques class. There are other TinkerMill classes scheduled to teach techniques, and more are being developed. Watch the MeetUp calendar.)

*Additional time, if needed to complete the project, can be taken at Open Studios on Sundays from 12:30-2:30. Also, bring pieces you have already made. It may shorten the time needed to become certified.
