Look Who's Talking Toastmasters - Gurnee, IL Pages

Do you want to become a confident public speaker and strong leader? You’ll find a supportive learning environment at the club!

What is Toastmasters?
Toastmasters is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing speaker and leadership skills.
Meeting are typically the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month in Gurnee. The meetings may move or be cancelled if they conflict with a holiday. We also aim to have special Speech-only meetings whenever a month has 5 Mondays to have the Speeches only meeting on the 5th Monday:
Meetings are typically held twice per monthOn an average meeting there are 10-15 members present. The meeting is divided into a short business meeting of upcoming events. That includes TLI’s (Toastmasters Learning Institute training days that give you a global education of the toastmaster experience-open to all members), Speech contests open to all members (Spring is International Speech contest where any toastmaster with at least 6 speeches can try to compete level by level up to International. Also in Spring is Table Topics- where toastmasters attempt to speak extemporaneously for 2 minutes). (Fall Contest is Humorous Speeches and Evaluation contest). Each of these outside events allows time to network with some of THE MOST interesting, cooperative helpful people that live in our Chicagoland area. The business meeting is about 5-10 minutes long.

Table Topics: One toastmaster volunteers to ask members open ended questions where they have a chance for impromptu speaking for 1-2 minutes. The goal is to teach thinking on your feet. Often we meet our boss in the cafeteria line and they ask us about a project we are working on. This is impromptu speaking and people who are able to communicate well tend to move up the ranks no matter where they work.

Prepared speeches are followed by a balanced evaluation on what the evaluator liked and if that speech was to be done again- things to consider. Toastmasters takes great pride in directing evaluations toward the goals of that speech only and improving the ability of the evaluator to balance evaluations with the pros first with only 1-2 suggestions for improvement. This format ensures that beginning speakers are evaluated at the level in which they start, and leaves room for more specific evaluations for experienced speakers. I believe you will only find toastmasters who offer much adulation to encourage the speaker to try again and kind evaluations that allow every speaker to grow at their own pace!

Members should always come prepared for the meeting. Members can sign up for speeches or meeting roles at: http://lookwhostalking.toastmastersclubs.org/. Some join to develop speaking skills, some join for improved leadership skills, others join just because we are a positive learning environment where you can learn many different subjects and expand your horizons!
