The Chicago Loop Happy Hour Group Message Board › Meetup Update and Reminder for This Wednesday: Creative Women Taking Charge

Meetup Update and Reminder for This Wednesday: Creative Women Taking Charge #1! Sponsored by FunderHut

A former member
Dear Loop Happy Hour members,

First, thanks again to Bryan and Tommy for working with me on this event; I look forward to more Meetup collaborations with you two in the future.

Creative Women Taking Charge #1 is taking place this coming Wednesday, 6 PM, at Old Town Pub, 1339 North Wells.  I spoke with the pub last night and we are all ready to go.  We have over 100 people signed up and a great program so this should be an exceptional evening celebrating the creative work of three outstanding women.  FULL DETAILS ARE BELOW.

All members who have RSVPed have been marked as PAID (free), as will those who RSVP in advance through Meetup.  Otherwise, registration at the door is $5.  We still have a few spots open, so please RSVP ASAP if you are interested.  If you wait and wind up on the wait list, we will do our best to accommodate you, but we cannot guarantee a spot as space is limited.

Old Town Pub will provide free pizza and tater tots.  At the end of the program, a few of us will stick around for OTP's always-fun regular Wednesday night karaoke!

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday!

Both women and men are encouraged to attend this CSC event honoring Creative Women Taking Charge!

One thing that is for sure about the Creative Social Club, this Meetup Group is blessed with many exceptional creative women as members. Whether they are entrepreneurs or artists or social media mavens or otherwise movers-and-shakers, the ladies of the Creative Social Club take the initiative in doing great things and making their creative dreams come true. One of the benefits of being the Organizer of the CSC is I get to meet outstanding people all the time, and in recognizing that the CSC's greatest unique strength may well be the ability to bring together Chicago's outstanding creative women, I have decided to start an event series honoring creative women and sharing their experiences with other people. The inaugural Creative Women Taking Charge! event will be on Wednesday, March 6th, commemorating International Women's Day 2013 two days later.

Creative Women Taking Charge #1 will feature an extraordinarily dynamic, diverse trio of women, all CSC members:

  • Lisa Canning: Many of you are familiar with Lisa, who is the Director of the Institute for Arts Entrepreneurship and the creative professional development maker space IAEOU, at which more CSC events are taking place in 2013. Lisa and I have become friends and support each other because we share the common mission of bringing creatives together and sharing with them knowledge to make the world a better place. Lisa is a passionate, energetic, and talented driving force in the Chicago creative community. In addition to founding the IAE and the IAEOU, Lisa was and remains a successful musical instrument retail businesswoman from the time she was a student at Northwestern! We will ask Lisa to talk about her projects, her own journey as an accomplished entrepreneur and artist (clarinetist), and her extensive experience working with creatives throughout her career.
  • Claudia Urbano: You may have met Claudia if you attended the recent Meetup Afro-Latino Drum Circle and Concert with Chota Madre. In fact, if you are into the international music scene in Chicago, you may have come across Claudia's blog, met her in person, or even seen her perform in a concert. A native of Peru, Claudia is the Publisher of the highly informative Chicago Urbanite, whose mission "to promote world music and dance in Chicago, and through it, to encourage inclusion, intercultural dialogue, and appreciation for cultural diversity". I consider her blog essential for anybody who wants to make the most out of living in Chicago, loves Latin music, or both. In addition to her work on Chicago Urbanite, Claudia is a member of one of Chicago's hottest bands, the rumba reggae group Nu Bambu. I got to take in their concert at Mayne Stage in November and I was floored. Nu Bambu is superb. We will ask Claudia to talk about her projects and experiences, world music and dance, and Chicago's development as an international city.
  • Ashley Luse: Ashley embodies the intersection of finance, creativity, entrepreneurialism, altruism, internationalism, and leadership, all less than three years out of college. The first thing that struck me about Ashley is that as a college senior, she raised travel expenses for a two-week trip to Uganda to determine how amaranth could be developed into a local market to fight malnutrition and an income stream for Ugandan farmers and entrepreneurs. In college, Ashley also co-founded a chapter of Global Business Brigades, helping a Panamanian bakery, and led Calvin College's micro-lending initiative on She was named Calvin College's Student Leader of the Year in 2009-10. Today, Ashley is a rising investment professional who also continues to serve worthy causes as Vice Chair of Young Ambassadors for Opportunity Chicago Chapter. We will ask Ashley to talk about social impact investing, social entrepreneurship, and her work with Opportunity International in using microfinance to empower its clients around the world, 85% of whom are women.

This Meetup is sponsored by FunderHut, a brand new Chicago crowdfunding startup co-founded by CSC member Dan Salganik. I met with Dan in December and I am impressed with his locally-oriented, community-based vision for crowdfunding. It is a good thing to see a crowdfunding startup in Chicago, but even more so to have one that is so focused on helping build local communities. We will ask Dan to provide an overview of crowdfunding, how it ties to people's creative initiatives, and a demonstration of how to use FunderHut.

Registration for this event is $5 at the door. However, if you register in advance (RSVP) through Meetup, you will be marked as paid (free). We will ask for your full name and those of your guests when you RSVP so that you will be on our registration list. Please update your RSVPs if your plans change and do not no-show as space is limited.

Event Host and Co-Sponsor Old Town Pub will provide free pizza and tater tots. At the end of the program, a few of us will stick around for OTP's always-fun regular Wednesday night karaoke!
