Queen Victoria: Grandmother of Europe

Will & Ariel Durant Branch Library

Let's kick off our next program with a discussion about Queen Victoria of United Kingdom (and since 1876 Empress of India) and the last British monarch from the House of Hanover. Queen Victoria's reign marked an apogee of British power and influence in the world. Spanning over eight million square miles, the British Colonial Empire was arguably the largest in human history. Victoria's reign during the time of the Second Industrial Revolution [masked]) technologically made Great Britain one of most advanced European Powers in the world. Queen Victoria's reign was also known for strict social mores and high standards of personal morality. As a senior Matriarch of European Royalty, Queen Victoria led an exemplary life and her high expectations of her children and grandchildren sometimes put her at odds with her own immediate family as well as extended family members of other European Royal Houses. So what was it like to live in a 'Victorian era'? How much political power did Queen Victoria really posses? How did the subjects of the British Empire fare in the Victorian epoch? Were there economic and political differences between numerous regions, countries and continents that constituted the British Empire? Let's talk about it at our next meet up.
