The root of European Civilization: Ancient Greece, Persia clash of civilizations
Let's kick off our next discussion with the return to the very roots of European civilization. The age of classical antiquity in the Mediterranean region gave birth to Ancient Greece (the cradle of Western Civilization). In the 5th century BC the ancient Greeks clashed with the Great Persian Empire. The conflict between the Greeks and the Persians (ruled by the Zoroastrian Achaemenid dynasty) was the first and arguably one of the most important cultural confrontations in human history. Many world historians consider the Greek victory at the battle of Marathon as a key turning point in the Mediterranean region. Ancient Western democracy was saved by the Greek state of Athens from annihilation by one of the most powerful ancient empire's in human history. The ancient Greeks saved their way of life and paved the way for democracy. Many historians believe that if it wasn't for the Greek victory at Marathon and later Salamis political and social system of common democratic values that are shared by modern European countries would never materialize. So how did the Greeks defeat the Persians? Did the battles of Marathon and Salamis destroy the Persian empire permanently? What were fundamental differences between the Persian and Greek societies? And why after the miraculous defeat of the Persians (and only two generations later) the Greek state of Athens got involved in a bloody civil war with Sparta that eventually resulted in the great tragedy for almost all ancient Greek states?
