Become familiar with the power equipment in the wood shop and at the same time make something useful, a cutting board. This is a two part class both start at 6pm Part 1 - Safety videos, cutting wood strips & gluing - Tuesday, August 27th Part 2 - Surfacing and finishing - Wednesday, August 28th This workshop offers a technical and hands-on introduction to proper setup and supervised usage of the power machinery available in the wood shop area at LCS including: table saw, miter saw, jointer, planer, router table, drill press & sanders. Basic tool operation and safety is covered while students participate in hands-on milling and shaping the provided hardwood. Maple hardwood, glue and oil finish will be provided sufficient to make one 10" x 16" cutting board. You are invited to bring other hardwoods (oak, walnut, ash...), minimum length 16", minimum thickness 1" if so desired at your cost. Do not bring soft woods (pine, fir, popular) as they are easily cut by knifes. Other woods such as purple heart are toxic to some folks and should also be avoided for cutting boards. Cost: Members of Loveland Creator Space: $75/person Non-members: $125/person Payable at the first class, check, credit card+3% or ACH transfer (checking account). Part one: We will review the safety video on the table saw and jointer. We will then cut wood strips that then will then be glued up to construct the cutting board. The glued boards will need to be left overnight for the glue to cure. The second part of the class will be the next evening. We will use the planer, flat sander and router table to finish the cutting boards. This workshop is for all experience levels and aims to prepare those looking for instruction & confidence in using the wood shop. Members must have completed the LCS Safety class (typ held on Wednesdays) Requirements: closed toed shoes, no loose clothing, if applicable hair ties for long hair. Eye protection. You may want to bring ear protection as the planer is really loud. Participants must be 18 or older to attend. LCS (Loveland Creator Space)
