Hocking Hills Trip

CAR POOLING LIST:    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiHeW5wjO7xWdHRFeUUyT0IwWHhaNmdZdDdfLTNBWHc&usp=sharing

Incase someone needs to get ahold of me here is my cell.  Not sure about reception in HH but I always have it on me for work.  Robyn's Cell #[masked] (text friendly too)

FOOD: A few people have inquired about how we are working food.  This will depend on the number of people who sign up. I know cooking for 20+ people can get a bit crazy!  If people have specific items they want or need to have (mine is COFFEE) they should make sure to pack that.  There are also restaurants & stores nearby if needed. The Google document below lists who has what "kitchen" items and who is offering to bring what to share.  Please open the doc and add your name and info. when you know.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1AkJUvawgXHkwgkmw1X_CKycid7hdqZuJmTY0C5IPeYg/edit?usp=sharing

ALCOHOL and whatever else: This has been asked about as well.  It is allowed within reason.....don't make us have to pull you out of the pit latrines at 2am with alcohol poisoning or get us kicked out because you are being loud and sloppy while intoxicated.  Anything else that may or may not appear should be used with discretion (we are in a state park after all).   I am going with the idea that everyone attending is fine with responsible adults enjoying themselves responsibly in a relaxed and open environment.  If there is a problem just let me know :)

CAMPING INFO - Hocking Hills State Park Primitive Family Campground.

• Sites are hike in along a 1/2 mile path from the parking lot.

• Each site is about 15' by 20' or so & up to 6 people are allowed at each site.  That is 6 bodies not 6 tents at each site. So 2 larger tents or 3 smaller.

• Each site has a fire ring & picnic table.

• There are pit restrooms along the 1/2 mile path, shower houses/regular toilets are located within the Hocking Hills campground (gotta drive/walk across the road).

• April 11th is the deadline to make your site reservation (either at your own site or sharing) for those who have already RSVPed.  On 4/11 the wait listers will be added and the waitlist closed.

Shared & Reserved sites:  https://docs.google.com/document/d/1og5pOqlYKx2bztGxccPl_oQx8iov-BtSRdaZVnx-JBU/edit?usp=sharing

YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING YOUR CAMPSITE RESERVATION. Click on the link below to get to the website to reserve a site.  Campsites maybe shared but everyone is responsible for collecting $ from others at their site or payments.  http://www.ohio.reserveworld.com/SearchCriteria.aspx?dt=4/25/2014&pSiteId=15620

Map of the campground if available via this link: http://parks.ohiodnr.gov/hockinghills

ITINERARY: 3 or 4 day option - Friday to Sunday OR Friday to Monday

Due to the size of this group we will be leaving at staggered times about 30 mins. or so apart.

FRIDAY: Arrive before dark so you can set up your site.  I will be there mid-day to verify the reservations, check on the sites and make sure everyone gets to the right place.  9pm Introduction meeting and set up hiking groups.

SATURDAY: There are two distance options (both see the same thing but one hike is 8 miles while the other is 14 miles).  Hiking groups will start leaving around 8am (for the early risers) and leave every 30 mins. or so after that.  Groups will be no more then 15 to 20 people.  Those planning on doing the 14 mile hike should plan on being in the first 2 groups that leave in the AM.

Beginner/Intermediate: Walk from campsite to Old Man's cave trail then hike to Cedar Falls for lunch via the Buckeye trail.  After lunch we will head back to the campground (about 7 miles total). Then drive south about 5 mins. to the parking area for Ash Cave hike to the cave and back (1 mile hike total). Return to the campground for showers and food!

I will be hiking with this group of hikers, my knees can not hike 14 miles in a day.  Plus I like a leisurely pace :)

Intermediate/Advanced: Walk from the campsite to Old Man's cave trail then hike to Cedar Falls for lunch via the Buckeye trail (about 4 miles).  After lunch continue on the Buckeye trail to Ash Cave (3 miles). You will probably get there just ahead of the group driving.  If anyone feels they can't make the 7 mile return hike they can possibly get a ride with the group that drove to the Ash Cave trail head. Head back on the Buckeye trail (7 miles) to campground for showers and food!

FYI - If you have never hiked 14 miles before make sure you can before you choose this option as no one wants to carry you out of the forest!

SUNDAY: Conkle's Hollow (2.5 miles, rim trail-harder in places OR 3/4 mile, gorge trail-moderate) in the morning till lunch time. As a 3 day option you would have everything packed and ready to go before leaving for this hike and can then head home afterwards from the trail head.

Those staying on till Monday.......Natural Rock Bridge and some Kyaking in the afternoon? Weather permitting of course. This place (see link below) seems to have the best pricing and both places I looked up did the same "trips" that start at the Natural Rock Bridge drop of. There is a group discount offered to 10 or more. http://www.hockingriver.com/Condensed_Canoe_Information.htm

**************

I reference this site for hiking maps and they have worked well in the past. Trails are well marked. http://parks.ohiodnr.gov/hockinghills Campground location maps are also on that page.
Note on the address above.  That is the actual state park entrance not the address for the campground entrance.  You can use that address for your directions but you will need to continue on Route 664 to the next intersection Route 374 (it will take you south and should be on your right).  The HH Primitive Campground is less then a 1/2 mile once you're on the road.  The entrance is on the east side (will be on your left if you are headed south).  I am told there is a sign to the driveway/entrance but there aren't any other roads right near it (before or after).  There is a road across from it that is a back entrance to the regular campground so if you go west instead of east you will need to turn around an go across the street.

If you are new to hiking/camping read the following Google doc.  There is also an information document in the MORE section of the MAC group on the tabs above. https://docs.google.com/document/d/14A_vBDYYhasIIQxLYPeFGQdZ0o4ZfWvloRfpKaiOKgM/edit?usp=sharing

Hi Everyone! I am biking the Zoo de Mac the weekend of May 15. We have an opening in our condos for 6 both at Boyne and Mackinac Island (fri and sat PM). It's a very fun event. You don't have to bike if you want to come along. The total price is less than $250 all inclusive. Give me a shout if you might want to join us. We are leaving the afternoon of the 16th.

Wow! What an awesome adventure at weekend with a great group of people! My highlights: great weather, great hiking and great company. But one of the best highlights and I'll never, ever forget it, was the "clap on, clap off and hip jerk" to turn on the lantern episode!!! That was first class entertainment and if I had that on video, it would have gone viral no doubt. :) Priceless!
(FYI: Here's the secret to turning the lantern on and off -
    It was th.....................................................) ;)

FYI - those hiking with me on Saturday: I will be heading an intermediate hike (aka 14 miles) I really want to explore this area since I haven't been here for almoat 10 years. I will be leaving first thing in the morning (8am or sooner if a group wants to go earlier). I will also be kayaking in the afternoon, weather permitting, and assuming that we do not have too much fun exploring! We'll set a fairly modest pace until we get to the caves where I encourage dawdling :) please message me your numbers if you want to go kayaking so that I can keeptrack of where everyone is at ifsome people want to do the beginner group.

    April 24, 2014

    • Rebecca

Hey....I think I said I was in for kayaking to you earlier....I have decided I am going to use the afternoon to wonder around with my camera instead. :) Sorry about my last minute change.

I am staying in camper cabin #3...if we have rain and the cabin is big enough we can play there if you guys want. Or, I can come to you. Keep me posted.

      1 · April 25, 2014

  • Charity L.

I will be arriving in HH around 3:00 tomorrow. I will first try to make a stop for a quick 1-2 hr hike at Cantwell Cliffs. Feel free to join if you like. Then I will head to the campground. Ill be across the street in the modern campground in a camper cabin. I plan on visiting all you other MACers at the family campground starting around 6 or 7 pm. Saturday I will lead a shorter version of the posted hike at 10 am, since we will have 3 kids with us. Im willing to take only 10 others. We will drive to old mans cave parking lot, hike the short trails there, then drive to Cedar Falls, hike the main trails, then drive to Ash Cave and do the main trail.

    April 24, 2014

    • Rebecca

Charity...I think I would like to go on the hike with you if that is ok. My stupid back is giving me problems and I would hate to get into one of the longer hikes and have it go out on me. Do you have room still?

This is tomorrow!! :) Please make sure you have made your overnight arrangements. Temps will range from 40's at night to 70's during the day (rain Fri). If you feel you need maps print them from the site above not sure how well phones/gps will be (hence if phones don't work there and you try to call me because you are lost (on a trail or road) it may not work. Directions to get to the PRIMATIVE FAMILY CAMPGROUND are typed explicitly above so please use them :)

    • Lee K

I would suggest folks looking for rides consider listing yourselfs on the carpool roster. I notice many are not, and I don't want anyone to be stuck home without a ride! Also, work out gas arrangements before you leave!

Also, I have a 3 person 4-SEASON tent, which is much warmer than a summer backpacking tent. Let me know if you are interested in sharing. I would like to depart Friday morning/noonish, returning for home sometime Sunday afternoon.

Hi, "only" 48 of the 54 people going have sites or accommodations noted. Please make sure you have made arrangements for yourself, if you just show up and hope to find room you may not .... Just FYI.
Weather this weekend there calls for mild temps (70's Friday, 66 Sat & 60's Sun. night temps will be in the 40's/50's) with some rain showers mixed in to Fri & Sun. This has also changed several times since last week so just a heads up when packing.
