Hiking along the Waterloo-Pinckney Trail (10-11 miles, 4-4.5 hours)

  • Jun 8, 2014 · 11:30 AM

The Plan:
The following sentence will be one that I have not written in a long time.  We shall be doing a part of the Waterloo-Pinckney Trail that I have yet to hike.  We will be starting at the western end of the trail and hiking about 5.5 miles in.  Then we shall do an about-face and hike the 5.5 miles back to the car.  A voodoo doll will be created of the first person who makes the crack, "Hey, I've seen this before" on the return hike.

The Meeting Place:
This hike shall start at the Big Portage Lake parking lot on the west end of Waterloo Recreational Area.  This is about 3 miles north of I-94 between exits 147 and 150 (in between Jackson and Chelsea)

Click here for the satellite map of the area which shows the parking area and is good for directions.  Note, there are two big parking lot here, the other is just north of the one we are meeting at.  I assume the other one is a boat launch.

Click here for a map of Waterloo-Pinckney Trail (also a good map of the area).  We are hiking from Big Portage Lake to Sackrider Hill.

Warning:
Please do not try to get to the place by typing "Waterloo" or "Portage Lake" in your GPS.  You will end up far from the trail and be in abject misery.  It ain't worth it- just use the maps I provided.

Other Stuff:
Pets are allowed.
Bring snacks and water.

Costs:

You do need a recreational passport on your license or they might charge you $11 (which is the cost of a passport) and give you a passport.

Afterwards:
We shall go to the Smokehouse 52 BBQ in Chelsea.  Address: 125 S Main St  Chelsea, MI 48118.  Please make sure you have directions to the restaurant if you plan on going.

google directions from Portage Lake to Smokehouse 52

Need Help?
Try here first.  If that does not work, feel free to email me back or call at[masked]-2351.

cheers,
Charlie

I created a Youtube page with silly videos from my adventures with MAC. A video from this hike is posted there. Here's the link to the playlist. Enjoy!

Had a great time...a group of resilient hikers! Thanks Charlie for organizing.

    Final stats on the hike:
    12 hardy hikers
    5 quadrillion (+/- 1 quadrillion) ravenous mosquitoes
    1 mischievous tick
    0 rain
... in other words- another great hike

I was about to upload a batch of random mosquito images as a joke. Then, I thought we probably don't want images of mosquitoes to display as a representation of MAC.

The pictures of mosquitoes might scare hikers away. lol

    What exit should we take?

    June 8, 2014

    • Charlie

Exit 150 but we are going to be leaving in a couple minutes. Give me a call[masked] and we will try to find you on the trail.

    We are officially lost! Ugh!

    June 8, 2014

  • dina

We are running behind. Got a little lost.

Oh, and don't turn on portage lake road... It is not the way. There are very obvious signs for the park.

    June 8, 2014

  • Charlie

Follow signs to beach area when you get in park... Oh, and there is no rain. In fact the sun just came out.

I saw it coming on the weather radar. Just not enough drive time to get there for the hike time.

Feeling a little under the weather, hiking in the rain prob not a good idea! Enjoy!

Sorry for the late change in the RSVP. With the long drive, the definite rain right now and the possible rain while we are hiking I'm changing to a no.
