Presentation topics and abstracts for this meeting:

#1: Row Level Security in SQL Server 2016

New to SQL Server 2016 (okay, it's a few years old already, but it still feels new) is Row Level Security (RLS), allowing database developers to lock down tables, giving users access to a defined subset of data in the table, consistent across all queries. It sounds easy enough, but there are several design considerations and pitfalls to be aware of, before implementing RLS is a corporate/enterprise database. This session will work through a few demos to implement RLS for enterprise solutions.

Speaker:

Erin currently serves as a SQL Developer II at Trean Corporation in Wayzata. With over 15 years of experience with SQL Server, as a developer and as an administrator, she has experience with most areas in the SQL Server realm. Areas of expertise include database design and development, query tuning and SQL Server Integration Services.

#2: Power BI Deployment Options

Have you ever wondered what Power BI deployment option you should use in your organization? Can you use Power BI datasets as the semantic layer or do you need Azure Analysis Services? Power BI provides a lot of flexibility when choosing where and how to deploy your solution. We'll cover the similarities and differences between Power BI Pro, Premium, Azure Analysis Services, and Embedded. We'll also cover which deployment scenario best suits particular needs. Finally, we'll cover the analytics technology scaling continuum and when we should utilize various analytics technologies (Power BI Pro, Premium, Azure Analysis Services).

Speaker:

Imran is a Manager at Avanade and Midwest Power BI Lead. Imran has over 10 years of experience successfully delivering analytics and data engineering solutions for major global companies. He holds an MBA from UNC Kenan-Flagler School of Business, is pursuing his MS in Analytics at Georgia Tech, and has several Microsoft certifications.
