(5) Video Illustrating That Hand-Setting a Free-Ball is LEGAL for Outdoor Doubles (at least based on AVP Rules)
Outdoor players sometimes disagree as to whether it is legal to hand-set (i.e. pass with a hand-setting motion) a free ball from opponents (whereas it is generally accepted that hand-setting a hard-driven ball from opponents is legal because there is an explicit rule spelling out this latter scenario).  I have never seen a written official rule which states that the former scenario is illegal.  In fact, for VBmatch outdoor tournaments, the rule has always been that it is legal to hand-set a free-ball as long as it's a clean set (i.e. as long as it's as "clean" as any other 2nd contact hand-set; NOT some elevated standard of "clean").  However, players who have played elsewhere sometimes disagree and argue that the official rule states otherwise.  I am aware that the "house rules" for  certain other tournaments may NOT allow for hand-setting free balls, but I've not seen it written down in any official rule book.

Below is a Video of an old AVP match where Team Pat Powers / Brian Lewis hand-set a free ball (a bump-pass over the net) from Team Karch Kiraly / Kent Steffes.  There was no call.  Nobody in the arena "freaked out."  The refs did not flinch; the opponents (Kiraly / Steffes) did not protest or have a look of disgust or do anything to indicate that they thought a call should have been made.  They simply continued playing.

See time frame 25:02 - 25:10 in video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruqCqMTRHHI

If you have seen this rule written down in an official rule book, I'd love to hear from you (with a citation to the rule book).

(6) Used Computer Equipment for Sale
I have two used laser printers : Brother HL-5040 and HL-2240 (quite new; owned for less than a year and used infrequently).  Please email me ([address removed]) if you're interested.

(7) Donation Request for USED Volleyball Gear by Washington High School (Fremont) Boys' JV Volleyball Team
Barbara and John currently coach the Boys JV Volleyball team at Washington HS.  The team has a great group of kids; for many, it's their first exposure to volleyball.  Unfortunately, some of the boys can not afford the proper shoes or knee pads.  At their first tournament, they were literally sharing their shoes based on who was playing each match.  The JV team could use any volleyball gear that you no longer want (e.g.  volleyball shoes in men's sizes 9 - 13 or women's size 10 and up, used knee pads, and used volleyballs).

If you have old equipment that you wish to get rid of, please send me an email ([address removed]) and I will put you in touch with the coaches Barbara and John.  Barbara and John will figure out a way to pick up any donated equipment from you.

- Don't by trashy !  Recycle your old volleyball gear.
