SUBBING Opportunity Tonight in Monday Alameda League
A team needs a female player to play and ref from 7pm to 9pm tonight in Alameda.  Format is reverse-coed 6s (women's net; men hit from back-row).  Please REPLY if interested.

(1) Do you want to play in an Indoor Reverse-Coed 4s Volleyball Tournament on Sunday 11/25 ?
VBmatch is securing gym space and finalizing several dates for upcoming indoor tournaments in December and January.  We are also contemplating hosting a tournament on Sunday 11/25 (three days after Thanksgiving) IF there is enough interest.  If you would like to play in an Indoor Reverse-Coed 4s Tournament on Sunday 11/25 to work off those calories from Thanksgiving, please let me know by sending a quick email note ([address removed]).  Several teams have already expressed interest.  We need a few more teams to make it happen.

(3) Highlight VIDEO from Sat 11/17's Cal Classic Men's Tournament
Last Thursday, one of the registered Collegiate Club teams of the Cal Classic Men's Tournament dropped out.  The tournament had been set up for a 12-team bracket; the bracket would not work with 11 teams.  As a fellow tournament organizer, I was very sympathetic toward the Cal Tournament organizer's predicament.

With less than 48 hours to go, Cal challenged VBmatch to assemble a team capable of competing in a collegiate club tournament.  I agreed to step up to the challenge and formed a team comprising the following nine players :

- Daniel (captain / setter / winner of VBmatch's 5/6 Stanford Tournament and 9/8 Alameda Tournament)
- Jevon (MB / new to VBmatch but his volleyball resume speaks for itself)
- Jerrod (MB / winner of VBmatch's 7/14 Stanford Tournament and 8/12 Alameda Tournament)
- Jeff A (Opposite / winner of VBmatch's 10/14 Alameda Tournament)
- Eric N (OH / winner of VBmatch's Fall Tues SF League)
- Jake D (OH / winner of VBmatch's Fall Wed SF League)
- Steven M (OH / new to VBmatch but he passed the "peppering test" with flying colors)
- Kris P (libero / winner of VBmatch's Summer Monday Alameda League)
- Ernest (libero / winner of VBmatch's 9/8 Alameda Tournament)

In general, I respect results.  After all, what good is a player who looks great in hitting lines or in practice, but can't win an actual tournament?  I made two exceptions in this case (for two new players who had each played in exactly one VBmatch tournament but did not win those tournaments).  Neither disappointed me on Saturday.  MB Jevon, along with setter Daniel, were the anchors of the FireStarters team.  OH Steven proved himself valuable especially when we needed his passing.  All in all, I was very pleased with this team.

With a total of zero hours of practice together, VBmatch Men's Team (called "FireStarters") took 1st in its morning pool and advanced to the top Playoff Bracket.  In the first round of Playoffs with eight teams, the FireStarters defeated Sonoma State. In the second Playoff round with four teams*, the team lost to UC Davis who eventually ended with a single loss record along with Cal (there was no time for a final double elimination match).
* In a single elimination bracket, this would be called the "semi-final round," but the Cal Classic Men's Tournament used a double-elimination playoff bracket.

Everyone had a blast !  Here is the Highlight VIDEO from the match where VBmatch's FireStarters defeated Chico State in straight sets :

Highlight VIDEOS from the Cal Classic Women's Tournament (where VBmatch fielded two separate teams) will be uploaded later this week.
