Empirical Unit Testing

Details

On July, 21st, we have the pleasure to welcome Dave Steffen to our user group. Dave earned a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Colorado State University with a dissertation on the quantum statistics of buckyball crystals that is best left undisturbed. He promptly retooled himself into a software engineer, partly because C++ template metaprogramming is still simpler than quantum field theory. He has spent two decades writing C++, mainly in the defense and medical device industries.

Abstract: We all know that unit testing is one of the foundations of modern software develpment. We all know what qualities our unit tests should have, such as "don't depend on whether the server is up" and "use only the public interface". But why these qualities? Are there underlying principles behind the guidelines for our testing procedures? This talk will propose some partial answers to these questions, based on what we have learned from nearly 350 years of empirical science.
