DAM: Machine Learning - 4th pillar of space science
Details
We would like to kindly invite you to the first Data Analytics Meetings seminar in 2022!
The seminar will take place in room SJ2P08 in the building of Pavol Jozef Šafárik University on Jesenná 5 street in Košice at 4pm.
Šimon Mackovjak (Slovak Academy of Science in Košice) will present how machine learning techniques are used for space science in SPACE::LAB in Košice.
Abstract:
Machine Learning is becoming the fourth pillar of scientific research. After theory, experiments, and simulations, it represents an additional essential approach to exploring nature and uncovering still hidden phenomena. Its role will be even more significant in the domain with a huge amount of data as Space Physics is. During the talk, it will be presented how machine learning techniques are used for space science in SPACE::LAB (Department of Space Physics, Institute of Experimental Physics, Slovak Academy of Sciences in Košice). The description of the space weather research will be presented together with specific examples of used ML techniques. The next steps and future plans will be also discussed.
Speakers bio:
Dr. Šimon Mackovjak, space scientist
In August 2014, he obtained his Ph.D. degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics at Comenius University in Bratislava. During his Ph.D. studies, he worked as a junior researcher at the Czech Academy of Sciences. Afterward, he continued as a post-doc at the University of Geneva. Since 2016, he has worked at the Slovak Academy of Sciences in Košice where he has led several ESA / PECS projects. The focus of his research is on space weather, especially on airglow. By utilizing state-of-the-art machine learning techniques he tries to bring new solutions for still open questions in space science.
See you in person on Wednesday the 18th!
