Jordan Peterson and Fredrich Nietzsche: The Most Interesting Man on Youtube and a Great of The Ages.
Jordan Peterson was born in Edmonton, Canada in 1962, and is a clinical psychologist, cultural critic and professor of psychology. Peterson’s primary interests lie in religious and ideological belief and in motivating people in the fields of personality and performance. Peterson came to worldwide prominence over the Bill C-16 controversy in Canada and his two appearances on the Joe Rogan podcast (the world’s no.1 podcast, for which Peterson currently ranks 6 and 7 for views of 998 Podcasts).
Peterson has published over 100 papers and his principle work is Maps of Meaning: The Architecture of Belief (1999). This book tackles why people from different time periods formulate myths and stories with similar symbols, meanings and archetypes; asks whether people with different ideological or religious beliefs are doomed to conflict; whether the claims of science and religion can be reconciled; and what can be done to reduce the individual proclivity for group fostered cruelty.
Friedrich Nietzche was born in 1844 in Germany and was one of the most prominent intellectuals of the 19th century, his scope encompassing philosophy, cultural criticism, poetry, classical scholarship and philology. Nietzsche’s main interests included aesthetics, ethics, existentialism, metaphysics and nihilism.
Though Nietzsche’s work is widely contested in interpretation, there is no doubt that his work was foundational in existentialism, postmodernism, post structuralism, literature, psychology and politics. Nietzsche is generally considered amongst the first rank of philosophers of all time, standing with the likes of Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Decartes, Locke, Hume and Wittgenstein.
Nietzche’s thinking was absolutely formative for some of the 19th and 20th century’s most important thinkers including Yeats, Freud, Foucault, Williams and Jung. Nietzsche was also perhaps Peterson’s most important intellectual influence. In this meetup, the focus will be on one of Neitzsche’s most important works, Beyond Good and Evil.
This meetup will consider the foundational impact Nietzsche has had on modern Western thought; Peterson’s original and ground-breaking theories and methods; and the relation between the two thinkers. In true Rebel fashion, we will also consider how welcome an enlightened mind like Peterson is by the current political establishment in Canada (and elsewhere).
No prior knowledge of politics, philosophy or psychology is needed. The discussion will be held in English. All curious people are most welcome. There are no fees associated with this meetup. We do request however that each attendee purchases something from the 567 Club, our hosts.
