Cryptoeconomics focuses on economic theories underpinning the blockchain and other distributed ledger technologies, the game theory as well as the incentives framework supporting them.

Institutional cryptoeconomics on the other hand analyzes the institutional economics of the blockchain and the emerging cryptoeconomy. Similar to traditional institutional economics, the economy is viewed as a system to coordinate exchanges of value. But rather than focusing on the rules and principles, institutional cryptoeconomics looks at distributed ledgers as data structured by rules.

Institutional cryptoeconomics seeks to understand the rules that govern distributed ledgers - and the social, political, and economic institutions that are developing from this new form of economy, and how the invention of the blockchain changes the patterns of ledgers throughout society.

"It is often said that we are at the start of a 'blockchain revolution.' Institutional cryptoeconomics offers an exciting way to understand what features of the ancien régime we’re about to lose, and what might take its place." (Chris Berg, Sinclair Davidson and Jason Potts, [2017])."
