CAMPUS LOCATION: Memorial Hall - Constitution Room
PRESENTATION: "Small Unmanned Aerial Systems Technology and Regulations"
by Dr. Alfred Gates Prof. of Engineering at CCSU Drone research consultant
DESCRIPTION:
This talk will offer a practical introduction to Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (SUAS), rotorcraft and fixed wing aircraft, autopilot systems, applications, FAA regulations, commercial operations, and current operations in United States. Several SUAS research aircraft and ground control stations will be on display including a Draganflyer X4-P quadrotoDescriptionr, a Flame Wheel F550 hexrotor, a IRUS quadrotor, and an all-weather test quadrotor, as well as modified off-the-shelf autonomous RC fixed wing aircraft.
The required electronics and programming for autonomous flight will be explored along with control methods, including advanced behaviors such multirotor collision avoidance and pneumatic launching. Autopilot systems that will be reviewed include, ArduPilot/ PixHawk (3DRobotics), Paparazzi Lisa/M, Twog, DJI NAZA, Wookong and DraganflyerDescription X4P. Open source ground control station demonstrations will include Paparazzi and /or Mission Planner. FAA commercial aircraft regulations, Certification of Authorization (COA) and anticipated commercialization requirements of SUAS in 2015.
BIO:
Dr. Gates has been flying fixed wing and multicopter SUAS since 2006. Dr. Gates has programming and flight experience using the following autopilots (software and electronics): Paparazzi, DJI, ArduPilot and Draganflyer. He has 30 years' experience flying remote control aircraft and is a remote control flight instructor at CCRCC in Farmington, CT.
