Makersmiths Leesburg - Fabric Baskets- quick and easy sewing

Class fee is $20, plus $5 supply fee. Please bring $5 (cash only) to class.

This is the perfect class if you know how to use your sewing machine, but just want to practice. Fabric baskets are versatile, useful, and just fun to make. This is a pretty forgiving project, so you do not have to worry about being precise. Use them around the house or give them as gifts. They also make wonderful holiday keepsakes.

In this class, you will make 2 reversible fabric baskets, approximately 4.5 inches tall.

From start to finish, we will cover the following:

• Picking our fabric- Do you like coordinating or contrasting? Or would you rather the inside and outside match? This is where you get to make the fun decisions that effect what your project looks like.

• Size and Shape- Do you want to make a big or little basket? What you want to use your basket for, and how that helps determine what size they should be. How to change the size and shape of your baskets. We will also talk a bit about interfacing at this point.

• Cutting- There will be a quick rotary cutter demonstration, however, in order to keep this class within our time frame, student pieces will already be cut. You will see what rulers are most useful for this kind of project. Also, I will show you a quick little shortcut that will make this project go even faster.

• Handles- Short handles? Long ones? No handles at all? Fabric or ribbon? We will be using rick rack for out handles in class, but will talk about other options. Also, we will mark for handle placement.

• Sewing- Some of the skills we will cover include locking stitch, right and wrong side of fabric, seam allowances, turning, top stitching, nesting seams, chain piecing, and more.

What you need to bring:

• your sewing machine

• thread and bobbin

Tools we will be using:

• Rotary cutter and ruler

• Pins

• Scissors

• Wonder clips

•Colored threads will be available to use during the class

Included in supply fee:

• Fabric to make 2 baskets

• Ribbon for handles for baskets

• Instructions, so you can make these at home

Parents- this class is fine for kids who are comfortable using their sewing machine. We will ask that you stay. You are welcome to watch and learn, but if you want to participate, we ask that you register for the class.
