Vernon Center History Walk

Details
Join us on a three part walking tour of Vernon Center showcasing three historic areas.
Jon Roe will lead a walk up Meetinghouse Hill, following the path taken by worshipers to the first church on the hill. At the top of the hill is a spectacular view of the Tankerhoosen and Connecticut river valleys.

Participants then walk to nearby Elmwood Cemetery for a tour led by Museum Director Jean Luddy. In this rural style cemetery, Mrs. Luddy will tell stories of local people buried there. She will also show examples of grave stone symbolism and discuss cemeteries as a place to understand social history through the years.
The walking tour will conclude at Vernon Congregational Church where church historian Lynn Sweet will present a history of this church building which was built in 1826 to replace the aging meeting house. Mrs. Sweet will use documents, artifacts and photographs in her talk and will discuss significant events in church history including the devastating 1965 fire.
