*** The VHS program has been postponed to January 27 due to expected bad weather. ***

When the Vernon Historical Society started in 1966, the first project undertaken was the writing and publishing of a local history book for children. Published in 1967, the first edition of "Vernon, Our Town" was used as a classroom text for 3rd grade students. In 1989 a revised edition of the book included recent changes to the town along with the addition of photographs and supplemental activities. By 2016, a new edition was needed to bring our history into the 21st century. "Vernon, Our Town," the 3rd revised edition was published in September 2018 and is being used this year with our 3rd grade students.

Vernon teachers, Tammi Venzie, District Instructional Coach, and Shireen Rhoades, Maple Street Reading Consultant, and Museum Director Jean Luddy will discuss the process for revising the book. Additional chapters were written with new information about Vernon’s villages, urban renewal, suburban development and local government.

The new edition includes lots of photographs for the students. Many historic photographs from the Society’s collection were reviewed and selected. Students from 3rd grade classes were invited to submit drawings showing what Vernon means to them. The work of 10 student artists was chosen for the book.

Books will be available at the meeting to review and/or to purchase.

A special exhibit downstairs in the Museum will feature historic photographs and objects from the Society’s collection that were included in the new edition.

The program is free and open to the public. Snow date Sunday, January 27.
