Explore, Enjoy and Protect the Planet
We represent the Sierra Club in Manatee and Sarasota Counties on the Florida Gulf Coast. We are dedicated to enjoying our environment and protecting and preserving it for future generations. The Sierra Club is the nations oldest environmental protection organization being founded in 1892 originally to protect the Yosemite area and the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. The pioneering conservationist, John Muir, is the most well known of the club's founders. He and the club are primarily responsible for Yosemite becoming a National Park. The club now has over 2 million members spread across all 50 states and Canada. So if you want to join with others to help protect our environment and also explore and enjoy the natural places of Florida and beyond, you will definitely want to look into joining us. Through this meet up you will be informed of all the different meetings, actions, programs and outings that you may want to participate in.
Our group has somewhere in the area of 2,000 plus members in the two counties. We have monthly general meetings on different topics to which all of the public are invited. And there are monthly Conservation Committee meetings one for Manatee and one for Sarasota counties to work on addressing specific issues that threaten the environment there. We also have a monthly newsletter. As far as outings go-our group usually has the most in the state of Florida. You can join our outings and go on hikes, paddles, and bike rides throughout our area. We also have an active ICO group: Inspiring Connections Outdoors (previously Inner City Outings), where dedicated volunteers take elementary age school children (currently from an inner city school in Bradenton) out on daytrips and weekend campouts--to give them positive experiences in our Florida natural environment.
Our General Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month, 7 p.m. at the Sarasota Garden Club, 1131 Boulevard of the Arts, Sarasota. Our local group website is: http://florida.sierraclub.org/sarasota/&nbs... (http://florida.sierraclub.org/sarasota/ ); with it you can view our monthly newsletter, see a list of all our outings, find out about other meetings and issues that we are engaged in and see a photo gallery. We have an office in Osprey: 2127 S. Tamiami Trail, 34229. The state Sierra Club website is: http://florida.sierraclub.org/ , there you can find out all about statewide issues and outings and more.
