For our first event of 2021, we're hosting Brian Teeman, co-founder of Joomla, with a talk on considerations to be made when asking for users' names on our websites. This talk will be subtitled for the hard of hearing.

Our second speaker is Tom Geraghty, Transformation Lead at Red Hat Open Innovation Lab. He'll be presenting a talk on the importance of psychological safety for high performance teams.

This event will be held over Zoom and the link will be emailed to participants on the day of the event.

Talk 1: What's My Name?

In the multicultural world that we live in how do you know my name? Is my first name my last name? What is my family name and what should you call me. As web site developers we regularly ask people for their name so we can personalise the web, but are we using the correct name? This talk will be subtitled for the hard of hearing.

Speaker Bio
Brian Teeman is the co-founder of Joomla, the second largest open source cms, and probably the largest 100% volunteer organisation in the world. He has never been known to be lacking an opinion or being too afraid to express it. Brian attends and speaks at many conferences and user groups around the world and the rumour that he does it just for the free beer have been proven wrong during lockdown.

Missile Destroyers, Supercomputers, and Chernobyl. Psychological safety in high performance teams.

Safety isn't just necessary in order to prevent disasters, it's also the single most important factor in team performance, and even more so now that most of us are operating in remote, virtual and distributed teams.

Building high performing software requires high performing teams, in which team members possess the psychological safety required to take risks, highlight problems and find root causes.

In this talk, Tom introduces the latest research in high performance technology teams, and provides actionable concepts to help you improve, or even transform, the way your team works.

Tom is Transformation Lead for Europe, The Middle East and Africa at Red Hat Open Innovation Labs, where he works with organisations including banks, government agencies, and even the WHO, to transform the way they operate and deliver maximum value.
Over his 15 years as a technology leader, he has come to believe that culture trumps strategy, and happiness precedes success.
