This is a reading group for anyone who is passionate about/interested in English High-Romantic poetry of the 18th/19th century. Do you like Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Shelley, Blake, Byron? Or do you perhaps enjoy their 19th Century successors, Tennyson and Browning? Come along if you're well-read in any of these and we'll talk about the major and minor works of any of these great poets. Come along if you're not so well-read in these but want to find out more. Come along if you just love the Ode to a Nightingale, or Byron's infamous life, or Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience.
I might do a short introductory talk on a high-romantic poet/poem and then just open the floor to a general discussion; as informal as possible. Or, if anyone wants to do a talk on a poem/poet they're interested in, that's also fine. I'd like to stick to the high-romantic English poets as much as possible, but we can also talk about more modern poetry if it has any relevance to these origins. So please also show your face if you find yourself drawn to: T.S Eliot, W.B Yeats, Hart Crane, Wallace Stevens, Emily Dickinson or anyone of that era/calibre. For the first few meetings we'll likely head to the pub to get to know one another and figure out what we're all interested in. If things progress, we can think about perhaps hiring space. Any suggestions are welcome; and anyone at all is welcome! See you soon.
