What we’re about

Manchester Social Chess Club (MSCC) is a different type of Manchester chess club. We meet on Tuesdays in the bar area of the Crown & Anchor in Hilton Street (Northern Quarter).

The club aims to promote chess in Manchester and give Manchester chess enthusiasts a friendly place to meet, have fun and learn.

Chess sets (and clocks for players who want them) are supplied. Players play informal games with or without clocks at a speed that suits them. (This has ranged from slow play without clocks, to 2 minutes for all moves.

Stronger players are happy to provide informal coaching to developing players. We’ll frequently look over rated games that one of the players has recently played.

As befits a ‘social’ chess club, we also often play light-hearted chess variants for teams, notably bughouse (exchange chess) and ‘hand and brain’.
