Manchester Web Meetup #5

Details

Happy New Year, fellow web devs! šŸ¾

We're happy to announce our 5th event, taking place on Wednesday 23rd January at Gazprom Energy's brand-spanking new Manchester office!

Speakers:

  1. Apostolos "Toli" Apostolidis (@apostolis09) - Lead Developer, Gazprom Energy
  • A .NET Golang imposter *

Go (or Golang) is an open source programming language that makes it easy to build simple, reliable, and efficient software. It's gaining a lot of popularity lately and is definitely classed as a buzz word.

'ASP.NET Core' is a cross-platform, high-performance, open-source framework for building web apps using any .NET language, e.g. C#. The 'Core' word at the end gives it a competitive edge that has got .NET developers excited about the .NET world again.

This talk focuses on the following questions:

What does a web app in Go and .NET Core look like respectively?
What are the strengths of each language in the context of Web?
Why should a developer choose one over the other?
Which language offers the most performant web framework?

Toli is currently Lead Developer at Gazprom Energy, focused on the Digital/Online services, primarily coding in C#. He has a background in building software to solve complex real-life problems, hence in a vary distant and loose way, applying his mathematics academic training.

  1. Steven Atkinson (@steven_atkinson) - Software Developer, Dootrix Ltd
  • Deploying an API using CloudFormation *

AWS CloudFormation allows you to provision your environment AS CODE! This is incredibly useful when you want
visibility of what resources your application needs in order to function.

We'll be looking at building a simple voting API using a CloudFormation template, and will introduce you to the following concepts:

  • Defining resources using YAML
  • Creating Lambdas using Node.js
  • Creating an API spec using Swagger templates
  • Using the defined Swagger spec to provision an API Gateway
  • Securing AWS resources using IAM Roles and Policies

We will be testing our API using Postman to ensure it meets the requirements that have been set.

Steven is currently a Software Engineer at Dootrix Ltd, where he focuses on delivering projects to a wide range of clients (primarily using .NET).
His background includes building new features for e-commerce platforms, building desktop applications using Electron and APIs for security organisations.
