What is functional programming and how you can use it to write better Java code?

Lots of libraries are built in the Java ecosystem recently, that follow a more functional style. From resilience4j, reactive types (e.g. Mono and Flux for Spring) to the core java Stream and Optional. There's also a lot of scary words being thrown around which may hold a team back from adapting these new approaches. Can we think about Functional Programming from more simple roots and build our understanding from basic fundamentals? What are the benefits we can get from using the FP paradigm?
What are the limitations that Java has in this journey and what libraries can help us get the maximum value out of Java doing FP.
