Current state of Java, JavaFX, and Pi4J on the Raspberry Pi

Details

OpenJDK 17 is around the corner, with a range of new features and enhancements. Join in with the friends of OpenJDK, who provide a free central resource for all things Java at https://foojay.io, in celebrating the OpenJDK on the Foojay Virtual OpenJDK 17+ JUG Tour, including at the Manchester JUG with Frank Delporte!

Raspberry Pi OS comes with Java 11 pre-installed, making it the ideal inexpensive computer to run Java programs.

But did you know that the Raspberry Pi is also a perfect match for running the latest JavaFX user interface applications or FXGL games? Combined with the Pi4J library, you can even do things which aren’t possible with your expensive developer computer: blink a LED, read sensor values, and control all types of electronic components.

In this session, you will be introduced to all of these topics with references and examples to get you started and learn more.

Speaker: Frank Delporte

Frank Delporte is a software developer (working at toadi.com) who started programming at age 11 with a Commodore 64 to control Lego trains with a relays board. After his studies he started as a video editor, but quickly returned to programming for multimedia productions, websites and businesses applications. As a CoderDojo coach (computer club for kids organized by volunteers), he rediscovered the world of electronics thanks to Raspberry Pi and Arduino and writes about it on his own blog https://webtechie.be and https://foojay.io/. In 2020 he published the book “Getting Started with Java on the Raspberry Pi” which is available both as ebook (on Leanpub https://leanpub.com/gettingstartedwithjavaontheraspberrypi/) and paper book (by Elektor https://www.elektor.com/getting-started-with-java-on-the-raspberry-pi).
