Snowapple, Adriana R. & Patricia G. - art for social change

An evening with Mexican video/animation artist Adriana Ronquillo (La Furia Estudios) & Patricia Guarda fine artist, Amsterdam. Have you ever heard of femicide? This is the murder of women, because they are women. Femicide is a major social problem in Mexico, along with other forms of violence against women. Last year the Dutch/Mexican band Snowapple decided they had to do something. Since then, they have gathered a group of artists, researchers, teachers, mothers, activists and journalists from the Netherlands and Mexico to join them on a mission raising support for change. On the 8th of March 2019 they released their latest single La Llorona (the weeping woman) in which they sing about the feminicidios. The Mexican artist Adriana Ronquillo made the videoclip for this song. Adriana Ronquillo is a multidisciplinary artist and a true lover of drawing. Her work constitutes a reflection on the conflictive relationship between humans and nature, the modern and the traditional. Adriana holds a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She studied animation at the Hochschule für Künst (HFK) in Bremen Germany, and a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from La Esmeralda School for Painting, Sculpture and Engraving in Mexico City. She was praised on Festival de Cannes in 2018, for her critical short movie ‘Ticho’. Her work received much recognition, such as the first prize at the Think Forward Film Festival in Venice, Italy; Ojo Latinoamericano award from Bolivia’s International Human Rights Festival; and the National University’s first prize during the International Animation Day in Mexico. For Snowapple she made the videoclip for La Llorona. It is a contemporary animation with techniques like stopmotion and and collage art. Adriana and her team of 12 people worked for the last 6 months on the video for La Llorona. It is contemporary animation art with special techniques like stop-motion and collage. What can art contribute in the debate in public space? Do artists have a responsibility on how they present the topic? We will talk about it with Adriana and Snowapple will play their music. Patricia Guarda is a Portuguese textile illustrator that lives and works in Amsterdam. This evening, she will be giving a talk about the portrayal of Women in her work and will exhibit a selection of her latest works. The textile illustrations of Patricia Guarda take us back to our childhood. She uses a combination of materials, wool, silk, linen, paint, thread, photography. Used freely but very precisely she tells witty, funny stories sometimes with a pinch of sarcasm. http://www.snowapple.nl http://lafuriaestudios.com https://www.instagram.com/patricia.guarda
