A Practical Introduction to Feminist Cartographies with Meghan Kelly.

What are feminist maps and how can we make them? In this workshop, I’ll review feminism and core feminist concepts before introducing feminist cartographies—their history, influences, impacts, and future trajectories. We’ll think about feminist maps in terms of content, form, and process to uncover new questions, new data, new techniques, and new workflows. I’ll argue that feminist theory can push maps and your designs in new and exciting directions! And finally, we’ll make our own feminist maps by beginning with icon design. We’ll collectively explore icon design, specifically Maki icons from Mapbox, through a feminist lens and spend the remaining time designing alternative map icons.

Analog materials such as markers, paper, scissors, and glue will be available from the Waag. You can also bring a laptop with graphic design software! See you there!

I’ve taught mapmaking in formal classrooms, but I’m also drawn to informal spaces to run mapping workshops. I’m a co-organizer for our local, Maptime chapter in Madison, Wisconsin."
