Intro to GeoPandas (Intermediate Workshop)

Details
Intro:
GeoHack Week (http://escience.washington.edu/geohack-week-2016) took place last year at the University of Washington. For this month's Maptime workshop we'll have a special modified workshop based on Emilio Mayorga's workshop (https://geohackweek.github.io/vector/04-geopandas-intro/) on GeoPandas.
GeoPandas (http://geopandas.org) adds a spatial geometry data type to Pandas (high-performance, easy-to-use "tabular" data structures and data analysis tools) and enables spatial operations on these types, using shapely. GeoPandas leverages Pandas together with several core open-source geospatial packages and practices to provide a uniquely simple and convenient framework for handling geospatial feature data, operating on both geometries and attributes jointly, and as with Pandas, largely eliminating the need to iterate over features (rows). Also as with Pandas, it adds a very convenient and fine-tuned plotting method, and read/write methods that handle multiple file and "serialization" formats. Come learn it with us!
What to bring:
Be sure to bring your laptop! Please come with Anaconda Python v2.7 installed and ready to go. Use this (https://geohackweek.github.io/vector/01-introduction/) to start getting set up. We'll post more detailed instructions soon.
Target Audience:
This workshop assumes a basic understanding of the Python programming language and vector data processing. If you do not have these skills but still want to learn about GeoPandas, feel free to come and observe!
Where to go:
Someone will be waiting to let you in by the main entrance of the King County building. If nobody is there, please call 206-477-4593 and we'll send someone down.
About your instructor:
Emilio Mayorga is an oceanographer and environmental data scientist at the University of Washington Applied Physics Laboratory.
