Web Mapping with Vector Tiles!

For this edition of Maptime, we will introduce the concept of vector tiles and use its power to create a web map. We’ll have a combination of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on experience. We'll look at the following workflow:

• Generating vector tiles with the Tippecanoe utility (https://github.com/mapbox/tippecanoe)

• Styling vector tiles with the Maputnik editor (https://maputnik.github.io/editor/#11.41/47.6518/-122.3225)

• Serving vector tiles with Tileserver-gl (https://github.com/klokantech/tileserver-gl)

• Creating web maps using the Mapbox-gl-js (https://www.mapbox.com/mapbox-gl-js/api/) API

We'll have a hands-on exercise of bringing vector tiles into Maputnik editor to style them. We'll discuss the benefits of a Mapbox Studio workflow to style and create web maps.

What to bring:

Target Audience:

Anyone interested in learning about vector tiles! This is a more advanced topic, so we'll assume some prior GIS and web mapping knowledge. We'll be discussing various vector tile workflows in order to provide a broad overview of vector tiles use in web maps.

Where to go:

From the SE corner of Union St and 6th Ave, enter Two Union Square (behind Butch Blum). Go up 2 flights of escalators, then continue strait passing 2 sets of elevators before you come to the farthest set that go to floors 4-22. Take the elevator to the 6th floor. Once there, look one way and you will see a sign for Floyd|Snider. Do a 180 and you will see a set of frosted doors. Go through the frosted doors - they lead directly to our conference room. Note that there will be no signage other than a piece of paper on our conference room door. If you arrive after 6pm, you won't be able to get up the elevator without an escort. We'll post the number to call if you arrive late in a comment before the meeting, but PLEASE try to be on time as it is hectic to let people in after the meeting starts.
