Membership Etiquette, Guidelines and Rules

MARYLAND SPYDER WEB
Rules, Etiquette and Guidelines.
January 2014 (Updated February 2017)

1. The Maryland Spyder Web (MSW) is a powersports Riding Club (RC), and social forum built around friendship, ryding/touring, mutual assistance, advice and fun for the Can-Am Spyder Community.

2. MEMBERSHIP AND PARTICIPATION .

a. Membership in MSW is free. Expenses for food, lodging and fuel incurred during rydes and events shall be borne by the member, unless defrayed through club funds. Ryders and Passengers wishing to participate in MSW rydes and events must comply with all guidelines herein.

b. Membership Categories: As HOGs are biased to Harleys, GWRRA is biased to Goldwings, etc, MSW is a three-wheel-centric organization. We enforce some restriction on membership based on ride type, as follows:

Regular Member: A regular member is a Owner of a Can-Am Spyder Roadster and his/her spouse, registered as a member on the MSW forum.

Associate Member: An Associate Member is a licensed rider (not passenger) of any other trike, or a two-wheel motorcycle rider who is the spouse or adult child of a Regular Member of MSW. Associate Members must be registered with MSW and RSVP to events just like Regular Members. MSW leadership will evaluate each Associate Member registration to make sure there is a connection to either Regular Member.

Guests: Guests are riders or passengers on any trike or motorcycle vehicle who are granted permission to attend MSW events on approval of the President or Vice President of MSW. This includes members of other Can Am Spyder ryding clubs. Guests may accompany both Regular and Associate Members, and must be accounted for upon RSVP by use of the '+' (Number) Guests setting.

MSW Affiliates: MSW may affiliate with other individuals or organizations, the Blue Knights for example; however, membership standards remain individual and separate between clubs.

3. EVENT SITE AND RSVP GUIDELINES:

(1) IMPORTANT: Electronic Waiver and Liability Release: MSW has an electronic Waiver and Liability Release statement to which EVERY event shall contain a link at the beginning of its announcement. Riders and guests are presumed to have read, understand and agree with the Waiver and Liability Release.

(2) The MSW event site is hosted on Meetup.com, and accessible at URL www.marylandspyderweb.com. To RSVP to any given event, you must (1) Join Meetup.com, and (2) be qualified to join and then join Maryland Spyder Web. (3) To RSVP to an event, do so by clicking the 'RSVP' link associated with that event's listing.

(3) When accounting for passengers/guests, indicated your guests/passengers via the RSVP function as a "+1," "+2", etc. You may change your RSVP at any time; however, please keep in mind that your event organizers use your RSVP to convey counts to hospitality services providers, e.g. restaurants, hotels and points of interest. Therefore, please know that your RSVP is important to us. If you are not interested in attending an event simply do not RSVP. Negative RSVPs (a 'NO' reply) are not required. If you feel your non-participation warrants elaboration, please email the organizers.

d. Attendance/RSVP limits: Rydes and events announced on MSW may be set with an Attendee Limit based on number of available MSW Staff available to host the event, size of the facility or home hosting the event, etc. In such cases, a 'Wait List' function will be activated. Interested parties should RSVP to the Wait List for standby notification. He/She will receive an automatic email at such time a previously-registered member cancels, or if circumstances change enabling MSW staff to open the event to more attendees.

4. RYDE/EVENT & FORUM ETIQUETTE:

a. Respect:

  • When a member leads an event, the event will be planned, discussed, approved, and announced. Hosting an event and setting the agenda, no matter how rich or simple, is a gift of time and effort from the person stepping forward to lead. You may email the organizer personally with questions, or discuss the event in open threads under the announcement. Larger/longer events may have planning meetings, in which you are encouraged to attend. This is the information you may use to determine your participation, and indeed, the agenda may be modified as the event approaches.

  • REMEMBER: Treat others as YOU want to be treated. Treat others with respect, courtesy and sincere concern. Remember that volunteer leaders are so because they have proven themselves as dedicated believers in MSW and have shown the qualities a leader should have in a riding club. Leaders, from Organizers and Road Captains to Officers and the Club President are first of all Members and ALL members are important. Be open with your concerns and comments, but to the right person and in the right setting. Don't allow mole hills to become mountains, avoid fomenting discontent; respect that we are all souls on a journey. Find the win-win solution!

b. Group Harmony: The final agenda of any given ryde, event or calendar thereof, is the decision of MSW's leadership and ryde organizers. Once the event and your participation begins, there will be no behavior or commentary to disrupt the event or to discourage or cause alarm to other participants. Attendees may withdraw from an event at any time by courteously notifying the event leader, or an organizer. Attendees may surface ideas on minor deviations from planned route to the ryde leader or an organizer during the event; however, the decision rests with the ryde leader/organizer(s). Attendees may also depart and rejoin an event at another meetup point, provided it is coordinated with the ryde leader or organizers.

c. External Affiliations: Members of MSW often enjoy membership with other clubs and groups, which is certainly encouraged as a matter of mutual support and networking within the community. MSW itself partners with select organizations for specific events. However, MSW events, rydes and its online presence are established by MSW for MSW members with the primary goal of improving this club and growing its membership. Therefore, use of MSW events, rydes or any MSW on-line forum for the purpose of recruitment of its members away from MSW to other organizations is strictly prohibited. Examples of this might be, (1) Passing out recruitment literature for another club at an MSW ryde or Event. (2) Posting recruitment threads or flyers on MSW's Meetup.com or Facebook forum. (3) Soliciting others participating in an MSW event (ryde, tour, etc.) to break away from the event to an unsanctioned agenda. This article does not apply to events hosted by other organizations, only using our club as a springboard to enhance another club's membership or external activity to the detriment of MSW and its events. If you have any questions regarding this article, please don't hesitate to contact the MSW Leadership Team at info@marylandspyderweb.com. Intentional violations of this article are subject to permanent removal from MSW.

5. SAFETY: Ryde leaders are responsible for the safety of the group, and safe completion of rydes from beginning to end. All instructions put out by the ryde leader and organizers must be obeyed at all times. This includes formation behavior, communications, parking and general information.

a. No ryder/participant who becomes ill, is injured or has a disabled machine will be left behind. The ryde leader must assure that the affected participant has medical and mechanical assistance, as appropriate, a way home and/or that the situation is resolved and the affected participant can re-join the event.

b. Intentional unsafe acts and/or disruptive behavior will result in dismissal from the event and potential removal from MSW.

c. Formations will be led at or slightly (not to exceed five mph) above speed limit, depending on weather, traffic and road conditions. "The two-second rule " applies for establishment and keeping interval in optimal riding conditions. Upon signal from the Ryde Captain, during inclement weather, the formation will apply the four-second interval rule. Look HERE for further information on the two second rule.

d. Helmets must be worn during all active rydes, no matter what the helmet laws are of the state through which we are ryding.

e. There will be NO ALCOHOL consumed by any ryde participant during a day's ryde. If an overnight or multi-day event, Alchohol consumed after the end of a day's ryde is the responsibility of the rider and should be moderated as to not impact the following day's ryde. Showing up an MSW event with recent consumption of or under the influence of alcohol will be considered an unsafe act. All riders should immediately report concern of intoxication or alcohol use preceding or during a ryde event to MSW Leadership or a Ryde Captain.

6. MSW PIN & PATCH ELIGIBILITY AND RECOGNITION:

a. MSW recognizes the loyalty and dedication of its members to attend events, including sanctioned day rydes, tours, "meet n' greets" and exhibitions. To this end, MSW awards a three-level pin system as follows:

(1) Bronze Pin Ryder: Awarded on completion of eight (8) sanctioned events.

(2) Silver Pin Ryder: Awarded on completion of sixteen (16) sanctioned events.

(3) Gold Pin Ryder: Awarded on completion of twenty-four (24) sanctioned events.

Note: The first award of the Bronze, Silver or Gold Ryder Pin to those earning them shall be at no cost to the recipient.

b. Ryder Pin Credit: To receive full credit for a ryde toward pin credit, ryders must begin the event at a club-sanctioned start point, and end the ryde at a club-sanctioned end point. Some events have multiple beginning and end points. Ryders who join or depart a ryde at its halfway point or sooner, or who otherwise depart a formation without first notifying ryde leadership will not receive credit for the event. This is also a matter of courtesy and safety. Completing a full event in this manner does not mean a ryder is unwelcome to ryde for part of the event. It is simply that to earn pin credit, it would be unfair to award full credit to a ryder who rode only a fraction of the event, while a ryder who completes the entire circuit would earn no more recognition.

c. MSW Backbatch and Wings: Effective the 2017 Ryding Season the MSW 10-inch back patch and 5-inch wings are considered restricted items. Ryders must have attained Bronze-Pin Ryder level to be eligible to purchase and wear the MSW 10" Backpatch and 5" Wings. These insignia are considered the "full-patched" representation of an MSW member. Our wings and backpatch will not be awarded or given as tokens to any non-member of the organization.

d. MSW is NOT an MC. Under no circumstances will any member, associate member or guest wear or display any patch or insignia marked 'MC', "<1%">, or any rocker panel under the MSW back patch that allutes to "territory" or a charter.

e. Other MSW Insignia and Apparel: MSW event attendees are eligible to purchase MSW's white-face pin, five-inch logo patch, wind screen stickers and apparel (tees, hoodies, hats, etc.).

7. APPLICABILITY: The above rules/guidelines apply to MSW members when MSW hosts its own events, a person represents him/herself as an MSW member, and when MSW events include participation by another group, forum or combined event; however, if MSW joins another hosting group or event, the rules of that group prevail.

8. Questions or suggestions regarding these forum rules/guidelines should be emailed to the open MSW email address, info@marylandspyderweb.com.
