Come join us for our next Material Matters meetup on Thursday, March 9th!

The theme for this meetup is "New Craft" and we have a great group of speakers lined up for you who will introduce their work and projects and share some stories that relate to this theme.

There will be popcorn, coffee and tea as always! Please also bring a donation of $2 - $5 to support the continuation of these meetups.

Speakers:

Thomas Groppi (https://www.thomasgroppi.com/) (Guitar + Violin Maker and Lecturer at ECUAD)
Thomas’ early Luthier roots begin in Paris, France, where as a young boy, he insatiably absorbed the nuances and culture of woodworking and blacksmithing through his Italian, immigrant, great uncles. His education in the crafts of guitar and tool making includes spending three years training with Daniel Stickel who studied under Geza Burghardt, Michael Dunn, and Jose Romanillos, while in Spain. Thomas then went on to study two years of violin and viola making with Michael Altshuler, who learned in Russia with Denis Yarovoy (who in his time studied in Italy).

Thomas currently teaches at Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 3D modeling and rendering (CAD) for Industrial Designers, using software such as Solidworks, Modo and Rhino. He has taught several 3D courses for graduate students at the Masters of Digital Media, as well as kinetic architecture courses for the University of Oregon. He also teaches Rhino 3D for the Jewelry department at Vancouver Community College. He worked for Rainmaker Entertainment as a pipeline instructor / technical Writer. As a freelance consultant in 3D, he has worked for a variety of companies including Mainframe Entertainment, Electronic Arts, Troublemaker Studios, Omation, CBC, Phantagram and Turner Studios.
