The City Nature Challenge is kicking off on Friday, April 26 and we will be setting up a night lighting station by the ponds that are mauka of Azeka Mauka that evening. Night lighting attracts insects to white sheets that make them easy to see (and photograph). Come and enjoy the Fourth Friday party, grab dinner and then come and hang out and see who comes to visit our lights. While we understand you might not want to hang out for all 2 hours of this event, swing by a couple of times. The insects we see at a nightlight station tend to change over the course of the night.
As this is the first day of the City Nature Challenge, we will be showing participants how to make observations with the app and be contributing observations to the CNC.
*What to bring*
A key challenge on a 4th Friday is parking. The Long's Drugs shopping center or Azeka Makai are the closest spots, but tend to fill up quickly. The the makai (ocean) side of the Safeway shopping center is a ~5 minute walk down Pi'ikea to the Azeka shopping center. You'll find us by the ponds before you get to the 4th Friday event.
If you want to take pictures to add observations to your iNaturalist account, bring a smart phone or camera. A camera with a macro function and a flash will be useful.
A headlamp or flashlight will be useful.
If you wish to help add observations to the City Nature Challenge, please download the iNaturalist app and sign up for an account. If you have not used the app before, don't worry, we will show you how to use it!
