Greetings, and thank you for visiting! This private group has a waiting list for new members.
The Meandering Mule Deer herd is a friendly, free, private (members names are not made public), walking/hiking/day trip group for people who can walk or hike on mostly level ground for 2 to 4 miles.
Your request to join will be automatically declined unless you include the following:
1. Your full real name. I'm a retired journalist, I'm not fooled by Desiree Desire, Allison Chains or Britney Rears :) This group is private to help respect your privacy.
2. A useful photo that will enable us (or at least me) to put a name with a face. I'm sorry, no exceptions.
3. All new members must have their primary residence in the Santa Fe metro area and spend most of their time here unless you've talked with Karla in advance.
We often share meals but we are not a dinner or lunch club. We always walk as part of our events, we do not drive to a restaurant meeting.
We are open to all people regardless of age, demographics, gender identity. As this time we are mostly retired women.
This group is especially good for people who love being outdoors but due to physical or fitness issues, temporary or permanent, cannot keep up with the Mountain Goats, the Burros, the Bobcats, the speed walkers or the trail runners.
Mule Deer walk along carefully and look around a lot, most of the time. Yet they still can cover a lot of ground! We do, too.
You don't have to have physical limitations to join us. Perhaps you just want to slow down and be fully present. But please realize that the targeted group for this hike dictates the pace.
Hikes and walks will move about 1 to 1.5 mph, and will be at least 2 miles long, up to about 4 miles in length, with as little elevation change as I can find. This means we'll be walking in Santa Fe most of the time as well as on trails. To put this in perspective, the average hiking pace is 2 to 3 mph. So this will be half that pace.
Each event will be described fully so you can judge whether it is right for you. Please, consult with your physician to be sure our level of exercise is appropriate and safe for you before you sign up.
Most of the time we walk on paved or packed surfaces to destinations in Santa Fe, NM. Occasionally we venture out onto easy dirt trails.
We take occasional day trips that always involve some walking.
Dogs are invited whenever possible, but they aren't allowed to chase the deer!
