What we're about

Meet like-minded people interested in meditation near you! Learn how to meditate or deepen your current meditation practice. A trademark of the meditations we emphasize is the ease in which they can be used both “on the cushion” and in our daily lives.

Each meeting will include practical, guided meditation, and a talk on how to reduce stress and other problems encountered in daily life and how to increase mental and physical well-being. As Buddhists, we are also interested in Buddha's teachings pertaining to liberation and full enlightenment. The teachings cover the full range of interest, from simply wishing to live a happier life here and now, to attaining the ultimate meaning and goal of human life - enlightenment. There will be plenty of time to discuss the ideas presented.

Although the meditations and talks are based on Kadampa Buddhist philosophy, you don't need to be a Buddhist to enjoy this group. Kadam Buddhism stresses a spiritual path of individual transformation and to look within ourselves for the inner peace and happiness we seek. Everyone is welcome!

Please ask us about our study program, the Foundation Program (FP), if you are interested in getting more deeply into understanding Buddhist teachings and practicing the Buddhist path in a more committed way.

This group is organized by Atisha Kadampa Buddhist Center( http://www.meditationinrhodeisland.org ) and Serlingpa Meditation Center ( http://www.meditationinmass.org )

Settling In: Meditations on Clarity (May 28 - July 2, 2020)

Settling In: Meditations on Clarity (May 28 to July 2) For our next series of meetings, we will focus on three longer/deeper meditations each evening, with discussion and commentary on technique and approach in between each meditation. Using the Buddhist Mahamudra teachings on the clarity of mind, we will explore the beauty of the mind’s true nature. Buddha teaches that mind has three levels: 1) The gross level mind, so named because it is easy to see and to observe, is the mind we are in during our active daily life. This is also the yakety yak mind, the mind that makes the narrative and commentary, the story telling mind. 2) The subtle mind, harder to see and observe, is the mind we are in when we are asleep and in the dream state. 3) The very subtle mind, usually beyond our awareness and much more difficult to find, is the mind of deep sleep. This is also called the "continually abiding mind" because this is the mind that continues after the gross level body dies. It is this very subtle mind that will be the object of our meditations throughout this new series. We will take time to "seek, find, hold, and remain" with this mind, learning thereby to settle in, settle down, and enjoy our very subtle mind. With focus, some applied effort and practice, will connect with a vast, spacious and peaceful experience, the true nature of our mind. Please join us on Thursday evenings, starting tomorrow on May 28, for teachings and meditations. Series Calendar: May 28 — Taking Back your Time Jun 4 — Connecting with Others Jun 11 — Improving in Little Ways Jun 18 — Letting Go of Holding On Jun 25 — Exploring Change Note: We are now set up for our Thursday night meetings via Zoom.
