Board Game Arena

Online event

In times when we can't get together to play physical board games, at least there's the option to go digital!

Board Game Arena is a platform where you can play many popular tabletop games, for free, right in your browser!

To play the games, please join the Vancouver Boardgamers Discord server at the link in the event description. That will allow us to chat via audio in real time.

For each event we'll start in the "BGA 1" audio channel, then split up into other rooms depending on the number of players and what kind of game they want to play. In general, in BGA 1 we'll play simpler, more beginner-friendly games, while those who want a more challenging experience will join a separate audio channel.

You will need to register on BGA, which only takes a minute or so. Then please put your user name in the BGA text thread so the host can find you.

I will usually plan to attend these weekly events as host, but I've found that usually someone else has a premium subscription, which, among other things, allows you to host games. (It's quite affordable, at about $35 a year.) So it usually runs quite well without me there, so I don't intend to attend every week. If you're brand new to BGA I'd be glad to walk you through the entire process (including registration, navigating Discord and how to play some of our go-to games), in which case please message me and I'll confirm if I can be there to help you.

Happy Gaming, everyone!

Tabletopia

Online event

Board games go digital! Tabletopia is a platform where you can play digital editions of many great games, right in your browser.

If you're familiar with Board Game Arena, it's the same idea, with a more modern, streamlined interface, and a completely different selection of games.

I have a premium membership, which means access to all games on the platform, and I will share the account info out to several volunteer game hosts. (Pending whether it will be possible to do this one several games simultaneously; we'll find out soon enough.)

We'll use the Vancouver Boardgamers Discord server for live audio chat. Under the category "Tabletopia," go to the audio chat "Tabletopia 1." That will be the landing pad, and we'll have ongoing games there, usually casual ones with higher player counts.

From there we'll split into groups of about 4 players, so we can have several different games going on at once, depending on what you're interested in. If you have a game you'd like to play, suggestions for games are encouraged.

What's not encouraged is being a jerk! Everyone is here to have fun, so if anyone gives you trouble just message me and I will talk to them. I've never had to ban anyone, but if it's serious enough I will, so we can all get back to having fun without toxic people to ruin it.

Jackbox

Online event

Jackbox games have much of the feel and hilarity of physical party games, and in COVID-19 times are a great substitute. They also work very well for remote play.

I will host the event on the Vancouver Boardgamers Discord server. If you do not have Discord, you can open it in a browser. Just click on the link in this event's description, and it will pop up in a new tab. Then look for the thread called "Jackbox". The text chat is where I'll post the code for the game. The voice chat is where we can talk in real time via audio or video.

You'll need a computer set up to show the game, because I'll be sharing my screen with the ongoing game. You'll also need a mobile device to play on. If you only have access to one, a computer would be better as you can have the two running in separate windows next to each other. You could do this on a mobile device, switching back and forth, but two devices is best.

You do not need the game or any other software to play. Only the host needs a copy. I own all Party Packs 1-7, thanks, oddly enough to a government grant to host online games during Covid.

After joining us in Discord, you'll see my screen share with the all 4-letter code for our game. Then, on your mobile device, open a browser and go to jackbox.tv, then put in the code.

Most of the games max out at 8 players, but many of them support "audience" members, who still get to interact by means such as voting. So don't sweat it too much if you're going to be late.

Oh, and since it's a late-ish night game, I keep the family-friendly filter off, unless someone specifically requests to turn it on.

That's it, have fun!
