Intro to OpenHFT

Details
Note: This meetup is at Peoplebank not Shine Technologies.
We'll be closing the meetup a couple of days before the event to allow people on the waiting list to be able to attend. If you are unsure if you can make the event, please hold off on your RSVP. Thanks ------------------------------------------------------------------
Wasn't there already a meetup in March?
Yes good question, well observed.
What's going on?
Java performance expert Peter Lawrey is in Melbourne for a brief visit. He'll be talking about the OpenHFT (https://github.com/OpenHFT) (High Frequency Trading) libraries that enable some serious performance benefits which you can read about below.
OpenHFT
Introduction to OpenHFT, open source HFT libraries.
-
Java-Thread-Affinity, A library for declarative layout of thread across CPU. What difference does it make and when would you use it.
-
Java-Lang, A low level wrapper for Unsafe with GC-free serializaton/deserialization, thread safe lock-less off heap and share memory support.
-
Java-Chronicle, A low latency journalling persistence and IPC. Can be used for "log everything" models as it supports tens of millions of messages per second with latencies around 100-300 ns (between processes)
-
HugeCollections, An off heap, thread safe, concurrent HashMap which supports 100s of GB which notional GC impact.
About the speaker
Peter Lawrey likes to inspire developers to improve the craftmanship of their solutions, engineer their systems for simplicity and performance, and enjoy their work more by being creative and innovative. He has a popular blog “Vanilla Java” which gets 120K page views per months, on StackOverflow.com (http://stackoverflow.com/) is 3rd for Java, 2nd for concurrency, and is lead developer of the OpenHFT project which includes support for off-heap memory, thread pinning and low latency persistence and IPC (as low as 100 nano-seconds) He is the founder of "Performance Java User's Group"
Peter Lawrey grew up in Eltham North, and lived in Hawthorn East for many years before moving to Woking, Surrey, UK (about 20 minutes from Heathrow Airport). You can find out more about Peter on his Vanilla Java (http://vanillajava.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/interview-starting-out-as-it-consultant.html) blog
