What we're about

The Mesilla Valley Grotto is a caving organization in Southwest New Mexico. We are a group of people who enjoy the activity of exploring caves. We are affiliated with the National Speleological Society (NSS) an organization devoted "to the exploration, preservation and scientific study of caves and their environment." you can find their web site here: https://caves.org/

We explore undeveloped “wild” caves, not the commercial caves with trails. The caves we explore require a helmet and your own lights, some clothes that you are not afraid to get dirty, and knee pads for crawling around. We want our members to cave safely with an understanding that we are only visitors to the caves splendor.

The best way to get involved is to attend our caving meetings. We meet twice a month, with the first meeting of the month held at 7 pm the first Monday of every month at the State Police Office at 4055 N Sonoma Ranch Blvd, in Las Cruces NM. It usually has a program, about a cave trip, or some other cave related presentation. This is then followed by our grotto business meeting. We then discuss our plans for the month, and then trip reports. The second meeting of the month is a lot less informal and usually at a members home, or a restaurant.

Membership dues are only 2 dollars a year (February to January) Most of the events on our calendar are intended for dues-paying members. We do have some beginner trips for people who are just getting into the hobby. So don’t be shy come to a meeting and check us out!

We are quite active with about two to three trips a month, these are only announced at our grotto meetings.
